55 AN ACT
66 relating to creating a program to designate historic sites in this
77 state.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 442, Government Code, is
1010 amended by adding Section 442.0089 to read as follows:
1111 Sec. 442.0089. HISTORIC SITES PROGRAM. (a) The county
1212 shall identify sites in this state that are historically
1313 significant to this state because significant events occurred at
1414 the site that shaped the history of this state.
1515 (b) The commission may designate or encourage the
1616 designation of sites identified under Subsection (a) through
1717 existing history programs, including:
1818 (1) local community landmark programs;
1919 (2) the state historical marker program under Section
2020 442.006;
2121 (3) the state register of historic places under
2222 Section 442.0085;
2323 (4) the National Register of Historic Places;
2424 (5) the National Historic Landmarks program;
2525 (6) the World Heritage List; and
2626 (7) other appropriate programs.
2727 (c) The commission may provide information regarding the
2828 significance of the sites designated under this section using:
2929 (1) historical markers and monuments;
3030 (2) publications and films; and
3131 (3) other appropriate media.
3232 (d) The commission may seek assistance from other state and
3333 local governmental entities in carrying out the commission's duties
3434 under this section.
3535 (e) The commission may seek and accept gifts, grants, and
3636 donations from public or private sources, including seeking
3737 available federal funds, to accomplish the purposes of this
3838 section.
3939 SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
