| 10 | 10 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 11 | 11 | | SECTION 1. Chapter 180, Local Government Code, is amended |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | by adding Section 180.010 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Sec. 180.010. VERIFICATION OF EMPLOYEE INFORMATION. (a) |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | In this section: |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | (1) "E-verify program" has the meaning assigned by |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Section 673.001, Government Code. |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | (2) "Political subdivision" means a county, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | municipality, school district, junior college district, other |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | special district, or other subdivision of state government. |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | (b) A political subdivision shall register and participate |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | in the E-verify program to verify information of all new employees. |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | (c) An employee of a political subdivision who is |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | responsible for verifying information of new employees of the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | political subdivision as required by Subsection (b) is subject to |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | immediate termination of employment if the employee fails to comply |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | with that subsection. |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
