55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to inclusion of a course on the United States Constitution
88 and the Texas Constitution in the curriculum requirements for
99 public high school students.
1010 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1111 SECTION 1. Section 28.025, Education Code, is amended by
1212 adding Subsection (b-24) to read as follows:
1313 (b-24) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
1414 requiring students enrolled in high school to complete a course on
1515 the United States Constitution and the Texas Constitution as part
1616 of a school district's social studies curriculum.
1717 SECTION 2. Section 28.025(b-24), Education Code, as added
1818 by this Act, applies beginning with students who enter the ninth
1919 grade during the 2023-2024 school year.
2020 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2121 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2222 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2323 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
2424 Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
