| 7 | 7 | | relating to a requirement that school districts and open-enrollment |

| 8 | 8 | | charter schools use metal detectors on each campus. |

| 9 | 9 | | BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |

| 10 | 10 | | SECTION 1. Subchapter D, Chapter 37, Education Code, is |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | amended by adding Section 37.111 to read as follows: |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Sec. 37.111. REQUIRED METAL DETECTORS. At each school |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | building located on a campus in which students attend class or |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | school-sponsored activities, a school district or open-enrollment |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | charter school shall screen persons entering the building for |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | weapons by installing a walk-through metal detector or using a |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | handheld metal detector at each entrance to the building that is |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | accessible from the outside. |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2023-2024 |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | school year. |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Act takes effect September 1, 2023. |
