88 AN ACT
99 relating to crime victims' compensation for certain relocation and
1010 housing rental expenses.
1111 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1212 SECTION 1. Article 56B.106(c), Code of Criminal Procedure,
1313 is amended to read as follows:
1414 (c) The attorney general may, after considering the
1515 circumstances of the offense, award a [A] victim of stalking,
1616 family violence, [or] trafficking of persons, or [a victim of]
1717 sexual assault [who is assaulted in the victim's place of
1818 residence,] or a child who is a victim of a murder attempt [in the
1919 child's place of residence may receive] a one-time assistance
2020 payment in an amount not to exceed:
2121 (1) $2,000 to be used for relocation expenses,
2222 including expenses for rental deposit, utility connections,
2323 expenses relating to moving belongings, motor vehicle mileage
2424 expenses, and for an out-of-state move, transportation, lodging,
2525 and meals; and
2626 (2) $1,800 to be used for housing rental expenses.
2727 SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only
2828 to compensation for criminally injurious conduct occurring on or
2929 after the effective date of this Act. Compensation for criminally
3030 injurious conduct occurring before the effective date of this Act
3131 is governed by the law in effect on the date the conduct occurred,
3232 and the former law is continued in effect for that purpose. For
3333 purposes of this section, criminally injurious conduct occurred
3434 before the effective date of this Act if any element of the offense
3535 underlying the conduct occurred before that date.
3636 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
