5	5	relating to the composition of the Texas Maternal Mortality and
6	6	Morbidity Review Committee.
7	7	BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
8	8	SECTION 1. Section 34.002(b), Health and Safety Code, is
9	9	amended to read as follows:
10	10	(b) The review committee is a multidisciplinary advisory
11	11	committee within the department and is composed of the following 23
12	12	[17] members:
13	13	(1) 21 [15] members appointed by the commissioner as
14	14	follows:
15	15	(A) four physicians specializing in obstetrics,
16	16	at least one of whom is a maternal fetal medicine specialist;
17	17	(B) one certified nurse-midwife;
18	18	(C) one registered nurse;
19	19	(D) one nurse specializing in labor and delivery;
20	20	(E) one physician specializing in family
21	21	practice;
22	22	(F) one physician specializing in psychiatry;
23	23	(G) one physician specializing in pathology;
24	24	(H) one epidemiologist, biostatistician, or
25	25	researcher of pregnancy-related deaths;
26	26	(I) one social worker or social service provider;
27	27	(J) two [one] community members with experience
28	28	[advocate] in a relevant health care field, including a field
29	29	involving the analysis of health care data, one of whom must
30	30	represent an urban area of this state and one of whom must represent
31	31	a rural area of this state;
32	32	(K) one medical examiner or coroner responsible
33	33	for recording deaths; [and]
34	34	(L) one physician specializing in critical care;
35	35	(M) one physician specializing in emergency
36	36	care;
37	37	(N) one physician specializing in cardiology;
38	38	(O) one physician specializing in
39	39	anesthesiology;
40	40	(P) one physician specializing in oncology; and
41	41	(Q) one representative of a managed care
42	42	organization;
43	43	(2) a representative of the department's family and
44	44	community health programs; and
45	45	(3) the state epidemiologist for the department or the
46	46	epidemiologist's designee.
47	47	SECTION 2. Section 34.003(a), Health and Safety Code, is
48	48	amended to read as follows:
49	49	(a) Review committee members appointed by the commissioner
50	50	serve staggered six-year terms, with one-third or as near as
51	51	possible to one-third of the members' terms [of four or five
52	52	members, as appropriate,] expiring February 1 of each odd-numbered
53	53	year.
54	54	SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2023.
