49 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
510 WHEREAS, The wounds sustained through armed service to the
611 United States are both visible and invisible, and it is vital that
712 all veterans and their families have access to appropriate health
813 care treatments and other resources; and
914 WHEREAS, According to the Department of Veterans Affairs and
1015 the Department of Defense, an average of nearly 20 current or former
1116 members of the armed forces die by suicide each day, and veterans
1217 account for a disproportionate percentage of all adult suicides in
1318 the U.S.; and
1419 WHEREAS, It is of critical importance that military and
1520 veteran communities continue to offer support to the surviving
1621 family members of veterans who die by suicide and connect them to
1722 available resources; these families have valuable lessons to share
1823 that can help prevent future suicides in veteran populations, and
1924 their voices should be included in prevention efforts; and
2025 WHEREAS, The families of veterans who die by suicide are
2126 deserving of recognition for their contributions to the strength,
2227 health, and survival of veteran communities, and Texas Veterans
2328 Suicide Prevention Day offers a fitting opportunity for all Texans
2429 to extend their support to veterans and their families; now,
2530 therefore, be it
2631 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
2732 hereby designate September 22 as Texas Veterans Suicide Prevention
2833 Day; and, be it further
2934 RESOLVED, That, in accordance with the provisions of
3035 Section 391.004(d), Government Code, this designation remain in
3136 effect until the 10th anniversary of the date this resolution is
3237 finally passed by the legislature.
