9 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Established as a branch campus of The University of |

10 | 11 | | Texas System in 1973, UTPB was initially an upper-level institution |
---|
11 | 12 | | that only accepted junior, senior, and graduate students; its first |
---|
12 | 13 | | freshman class, known as the "Pioneer Freshmen," entered the school |
---|
13 | 14 | | in 1991; over the years, the university has expanded to include five |
---|
14 | 15 | | academic colleges that together offer more than 75 undergraduate |
---|
15 | 16 | | and graduate degrees; to date, there have been over 28,800 UTPB |
---|
16 | 17 | | graduates; and |
---|
17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, UTPB has played an instrumental role in the growth |
---|
18 | 19 | | and vitality of the Permian Basin region; the university serves as a |
---|
19 | 20 | | major source of skilled workers for the area's oil and gas industry, |
---|
20 | 21 | | and its liberal arts programs have contributed to the unique |
---|
21 | 22 | | culture of local communities; in addition, the university has |
---|
22 | 23 | | helped the region tackle critical issues related to the energy |
---|
23 | 24 | | industry, education, the environment, and public health; and |
---|
24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, To meet the diverse educational needs of its |

25 | 26 | | students, UTPB has opened a wide variety of facilities, including |
---|
26 | 27 | | its engineering complex in Midland, the Wagner Noël Performing Arts |
---|
27 | 28 | | Center, and the D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center; |
---|
28 | 29 | | the university has also worked to increase access to higher |
---|
29 | 30 | | education by partnering with school districts and establishing the |
---|
30 | 31 | | Falcon Free program, which covers the cost of tuition and fees for |
---|
31 | 32 | | students in need; and |
---|
32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding 50 years ago, The University of |

33 | 34 | | Texas Permian Basin has provided many Texans with a strong |
---|
34 | 35 | | foundation for achievement, and it is a pleasure to join in |

35 | 36 | | recognizing the institution on this milestone occasion; now, |

37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |

38 | 39 | | hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of The University of Texas |

39 | 40 | | Permian Basin on the occasion of UTPB Day at the State Capitol on |
