56 WHEREAS, Representatives of The University of Texas Permian
67 Basin are gathering at the State Capitol on May 3, 2023, providing a
78 fitting opportunity to recognize the institution for its 50 years
89 of service; and
910 WHEREAS, Established as a branch campus of The University of
1011 Texas System in 1973, UTPB was initially an upper-level institution
1112 that only accepted junior, senior, and graduate students; its first
1213 freshman class, known as the "Pioneer Freshmen," entered the school
1314 in 1991; over the years, the university has expanded to include five
1415 academic colleges that together offer more than 75 undergraduate
1516 and graduate degrees; to date, there have been over 28,800 UTPB
1617 graduates; and
1718 WHEREAS, UTPB has played an instrumental role in the growth
1819 and vitality of the Permian Basin region; the university serves as a
1920 major source of skilled workers for the area's oil and gas industry,
2021 and its liberal arts programs have contributed to the unique
2122 culture of local communities; in addition, the university has
2223 helped the region tackle critical issues related to the energy
2324 industry, education, the environment, and public health; and
2425 WHEREAS, To meet the diverse educational needs of its
2526 students, UTPB has opened a wide variety of facilities, including
2627 its engineering complex in Midland, the Wagner Noël Performing Arts
2728 Center, and the D. Kirk Edwards Family Human Performance Center;
2829 the university has also worked to increase access to higher
2930 education by partnering with school districts and establishing the
3031 Falcon Free program, which covers the cost of tuition and fees for
3132 students in need; and
3233 WHEREAS, Since its founding 50 years ago, The University of
3334 Texas Permian Basin has provided many Texans with a strong
3435 foundation for achievement, and it is a pleasure to join in
3536 recognizing the institution on this milestone occasion; now,
3637 therefore, be it
3738 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
3839 hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of The University of Texas
3940 Permian Basin on the occasion of UTPB Day at the State Capitol on
4041 May 3, 2023, and extend to all those associated with the institution
4142 sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
4243 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4344 prepared for the university as an expression of high regard by the
4445 Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
