55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, The Honorable Lloyd Millard Bentsen Jr., former
77 United States senator and secretary of the Department of the
88 Treasury, dedicated his life to public service; and
99 WHEREAS, Born in Mission, Secretary Bentsen graduated from
1010 The University of Texas School of Law and then served his country as
1111 a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1945; a recipient of
1212 the Distinguished Flying Cross, he flew 35 missions over Germany,
1313 Romania, and Italy and was shot down twice; he led 600 Allied troops
1414 and guided the operations of 15 bombers, and he attained the rank of
1515 colonel; and
1616 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen returned to his hometown after the
1717 war, serving the Rio Grande Valley as Hidalgo County judge until
1818 1948, when he was elected to the first of three terms in the
1919 U.S. House of Representatives; he then enjoyed success in the
2020 private sector before winning election to the U.S. Senate in 1970;
2121 following 22 years in that office, he retired from Congress to
2222 accept President Bill Clinton's nomination as the secretary of the
2323 treasury; and
2424 WHEREAS, Over the course of his long and exceptionally
2525 distinguished career in Congress, Secretary Bentsen played a key
2626 role in the passage of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act,
2727 the creation of Individual Retirement Accounts, and the enactment
2828 of legislation protecting low-income women and children by
2929 providing easier access to health care; his legacy of achievement
3030 earned him numerous accolades, including the Presidential Medal of
3131 Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor; he was recognized by
3232 The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston for his
3333 work to support advancements in medical care for stroke victims;
3434 and
3535 WHEREAS, Secretary Bentsen passed away in 2006 at the age of
3636 85 after having made vital contributions to this state and nation,
3737 and his tireless endeavors in behalf of his fellow Americans
3838 deserve lasting respect and appreciation; naming the Texas
3939 Workforce Commission Building in the Capitol Complex in his honor
4040 would provide a most fitting tribute to his outstanding
4141 accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
4343 hereby direct the Texas Facilities Commission to rename the Texas
4444 Workforce Commission Building the Lloyd M. Bentsen State Office
4545 Building; and, be it further
4646 RESOLVED, That the secretary of state forward an official
4747 copy of this resolution to the chair and executive director of the
4848 Texas Facilities Commission.
