| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, An independent United States Supreme Court is an |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | essential element of America's system of checks and balances that |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | protects our constitutional rights; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, For more than 150 years, the U.S. Supreme Court has |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | been composed of nine justices; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The president and congress should be prohibited from |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | undermining the independence of the court by changing the number of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | appointed justices; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | hereby respectfully urge the Congress of the United States to |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | propose and submit to the states for ratification the "Keep Nine" |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | amendment to the United States Constitution, stating that "The |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | justices"; and, be it further |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Representatives of the United States Congress, and to all the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | members of the Texas delegation to Congress with the request that |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | this resolution be entered in the Congressional Record as a |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | memorial to the Congress of the United States of America. |
