55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, An independent United States Supreme Court is an
77 essential element of America's system of checks and balances that
88 protects our constitutional rights; and
99 WHEREAS, For more than 150 years, the U.S. Supreme Court has
1010 been composed of nine justices; and
1111 WHEREAS, The president and congress should be prohibited from
1212 undermining the independence of the court by changing the number of
1313 appointed justices; now, therefore, be it
1414 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
1515 hereby respectfully urge the Congress of the United States to
1616 propose and submit to the states for ratification the "Keep Nine"
1717 amendment to the United States Constitution, stating that "The
1818 Supreme Court of the United States shall be composed of nine
1919 justices"; and, be it further
2020 RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official
2121 copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to
2222 the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of
2323 Representatives of the United States Congress, and to all the
2424 members of the Texas delegation to Congress with the request that
2525 this resolution be entered in the Congressional Record as a
2626 memorial to the Congress of the United States of America.
