5 | 23 | | WHEREAS, The 2017 mass shooting in Sutherland Springs |
---|
6 | 24 | | continues to exact a heavy toll on survivors, their loved ones, and |
---|
7 | 25 | | the families of the slain; and |
---|
8 | 26 | | WHEREAS, In the attack, 26 Texans were killed and 20 more were |
---|
9 | 27 | | wounded; today, survivors still struggle with impairments and |
---|
10 | 28 | | endure physical and emotional pain; injuries require ongoing care, |
---|
11 | 29 | | therapy, and psychological treatment, leaving families burdened by |
---|
12 | 30 | | medical expenses even as they adapt to lost income and earning |
---|
13 | 31 | | capacity; and |
---|
14 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The United States government has thus far failed to |
---|
15 | 33 | | extend the same level of support it has provided in the wake of |
---|
16 | 34 | | similar horrific incidents; it agreed to pay $88 million to the |
---|
17 | 35 | | families of nine people shot dead at Emanuel AME Church in |
---|
18 | 36 | | Charleston, South Carolina, in 2015, and it offered $127.5 million |
---|
19 | 37 | | to the families of those killed in the 2018 shooting at Marjory |
---|
20 | 38 | | Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida; and |
---|
21 | 39 | | WHEREAS, In the years to come, the aftereffects of the |
---|
22 | 40 | | Sutherland Springs shooting will remain a source of tremendous |
---|
23 | 41 | | suffering and hardship in the lives of those who survived, their |
---|
24 | 42 | | families, and the families of those who perished; and |
---|
25 | 43 | | WHEREAS, Their suffering and hardship deserves equitable |
---|
26 | 44 | | requital to their peers; now, therefore, be it |
---|
27 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
28 | 46 | | hereby urge the United States Congress to ensure that the survivors |
---|
29 | 47 | | and surviving families of the Sutherland Springs mass shooting |
---|
30 | 48 | | receive compensation equivalent to the relief provided to those |
---|
31 | 49 | | impacted by similar incidents; and, be it further |
---|
32 | 50 | | RESOLVED, That the Texas secretary of state forward official |

33 | 51 | | copies of this resolution to the president of the United States, to |

34 | 52 | | the president of the Senate and the speaker of the House of |
