6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Constructed in 1973, the JFK Causeway Bridge serves |

7 | 7 | | as a major gateway between Padre Island and the Corpus |

8 | 8 | | Christi/Flour Bluff area, and the causeway is nearing capacity due |

9 | 9 | | to increased vehicle traffic; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Padre Island, Mustang Island, Port Aransas, Corpus |
---|
11 | 11 | | Christi, and other communities surrounding the JFK Causeway have |
---|
12 | 12 | | experienced significant population growth over the years, creating |
---|
13 | 13 | | a critical need for additional traffic routes to accommodate more |
---|
14 | 14 | | travelers between the barrier island and the mainland; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, During dangerous and life-threatening weather |
---|
16 | 16 | | events, easily accessible evacuation routes are crucial to ensure |
---|
17 | 17 | | the safety of area residents, and the single route provided by the |
---|
18 | 18 | | JFK Causeway may not be sufficient in an emergency; slower travel |
---|
19 | 19 | | times caused by high traffic density could endanger the lives of |
---|
20 | 20 | | evacuees; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The potential benefits of constructing a second |
---|
22 | 22 | | causeway connecting Padre Island to the mainland range from |
---|
23 | 23 | | reducing travel time to preserving life, and it is imperative that |
---|
24 | 24 | | this option be explored; now, therefore, be it |
---|
25 | 25 | | RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas |
---|
26 | 26 | | hereby request that the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | House of Representatives create a joint interim committee to study |
---|
28 | 28 | | the construction of a second vehicular causeway connecting Padre |
---|
29 | 29 | | Island to the mainland; and, be it further |
---|
30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the committee submit a full report, including |
---|
31 | 31 | | findings and recommendations, to the 89th Texas Legislature in |
---|
32 | 32 | | January 2025. |
