55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Constructed in 1973, the JFK Causeway Bridge serves
77 as a major gateway between Padre Island and the Corpus
88 Christi/Flour Bluff area, and the causeway is nearing capacity due
99 to increased vehicle traffic; and
1010 WHEREAS, Padre Island, Mustang Island, Port Aransas, Corpus
1111 Christi, and other communities surrounding the JFK Causeway have
1212 experienced significant population growth over the years, creating
1313 a critical need for additional traffic routes to accommodate more
1414 travelers between the barrier island and the mainland; and
1515 WHEREAS, During dangerous and life-threatening weather
1616 events, easily accessible evacuation routes are crucial to ensure
1717 the safety of area residents, and the single route provided by the
1818 JFK Causeway may not be sufficient in an emergency; slower travel
1919 times caused by high traffic density could endanger the lives of
2020 evacuees; and
2121 WHEREAS, The potential benefits of constructing a second
2222 causeway connecting Padre Island to the mainland range from
2323 reducing travel time to preserving life, and it is imperative that
2424 this option be explored; now, therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
2626 hereby request that the Lieutenant Governor and the Speaker of the
2727 House of Representatives create a joint interim committee to study
2828 the construction of a second vehicular causeway connecting Padre
2929 Island to the mainland; and, be it further
3030 RESOLVED, That the committee submit a full report, including
3131 findings and recommendations, to the 89th Texas Legislature in
3232 January 2025.
