5	6		WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Foundation has presented its
6	7		2023 Star of Texas Award to the Cavender family, the founders of the
7	8		iconic Western wear company Cavender's; and
8	9		WHEREAS, Each year, the Texas Historical Foundation confers
9	10		this accolade to recognize individuals or businesses that have made
10	11		an important contribution to preserving and promoting Texas
11	12		culture; and
12	13		WHEREAS, Cavender's was founded in Pittsburg in 1965 by James
13	14		and Pat Cavender, who decided to try selling clothing after
14	15		dabbling in several other ventures; when the three styles of Tony
15	16		Lama boots they stocked sold well, Mr. Cavender ordered more; in
16	17		the 1970s, he bought and resold an entire cattle trailer load of
17	18		boots from a manufacturer that was going out of business; and
18	19		WHEREAS, During the Urban Cowboy craze of the 1980s,
19	20		Cavender's flourished, and after that era died down, the store
20	21		still continued to thrive; the company formed a strategic alliance
21	22		with a promising country singer, George Strait, who would go on to
22	23		superstardom; and
23	24		WHEREAS, Cavender's has been named the nation's top retailer
24	25		for many prominent manufacturers, among them Lucchese, Justin, Tony
25	26		Lama, and Wrangler; along the way, it has strived to maintain its
26	27		reputation for friendly customer service, as well as connections to
27	28		its roots; stores display Cavender family photos, including old
28	29		black-and-white pictures of grandparents on their ranches in
29	30		Albany, Texas, and Idabel, Oklahoma; in 2019, the Cavender family
30	31		was inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame; and
31	32		WHEREAS, Today, Cavender's has more than 90 stores across the
32	33		South and Southwest; operations are run by the sons of James and
33	34		Pat, brothers Joe, Mike, and Clay Cavender; and
34	35		WHEREAS, While providing customers with traditional Western
35	36		wear, the Cavender family has worked to preserve an important
36	37		legacy, and the longevity of its business is a tribute to
37	38		generations of careful stewardship; now, therefore, be it
38	39		RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
39	40		hereby congratulate the Cavender family on its receipt of the 2023
40	41		Star of Texas Award from the Texas Historical Foundation and extend
41	42		to all those associated with Cavender's sincere best wishes for
42	43		continued success in the years to come; and, be it further
43	44		RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
44	45		prepared for the Cavender family as an expression of high regard by
45	46		the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.
