55 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
66 WHEREAS, Countless lives were touched by the kindness and
77 generosity of H. Philip Whitworth of Austin, who passed away on
88 November 10, 2022, at the age of 75; and
99 WHEREAS, The son of Harry Philip Whitworth and Edna Widén
1010 Whitworth, "Flip" Whitworth was born in Austin on February 25,
1111 1947, and grew up with a brother, Gary, and two sisters, Julie and
1212 Ann; he graduated from Stephen F. Austin High School, where he
1313 excelled in both academics and athletics; as a student at The
1414 University of Texas at Austin, he joined the Phi Gamma Delta
1515 fraternity and formed many lifelong friendships; he completed both
1616 his bachelor's and law degrees with honors; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Whitworth joined the Scott, Douglass & McConnico
1818 firm just a year after its founding; he became an expert in oil,
1919 gas, and energy law and served in a number of leadership positions,
2020 including as chair of the State Bar of Texas Oil, Gas, and Mineral
2121 Law Section and the Oil and Natural Gas Exploration and Production
2222 Committee of the American Bar Association's Section of Natural
2323 Resources, Energy and Environmental Law; over the years, he was
2424 frequently called upon as a guest lecturer at his alma mater; he
2525 received the prestigious Ernest E. Smith Lifetime Achievement Award
2626 from the Texas Journal of Oil, Gas and Energy Law in 2016; for 25
2727 years, he served his firm as hiring partner; with his warmth, charm,
2828 and keen eye for talent, he was ideally suited to this role; he was a
2929 mentor to many, and his smile and infectious laughter brightened
3030 days at the office for all; and
3131 WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Whitworth shared a
3232 fulfilling marriage with his wife, Suzie, and he took great pride in
3333 his children, Scott and Anne, and grandchildren, Rhett and Wesley;
3434 he was a loyal, thoughtful friend and a man of strong faith; in his
3535 free time, he enjoyed playing golf, traveling, cheering for his
3636 Longhorns, and giving back to his community; and
3737 WHEREAS, While his loss is difficult to bear, Flip Whitworth
3838 has left behind numerous friends and loved ones whose lives are far
3939 richer for having known him, and he will always hold a treasured
4040 place in their hearts; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the 88th Legislature of the State of Texas
4242 hereby pay tribute to the memory of H. Philip "Flip" Whitworth and
4343 extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
4444 wife, Suzie Page Whitworth; to his children, Gary Scott Whitworth
4545 and his wife, Lisle, and Anne Ashley Whitworth-Stich and her
4646 husband, Mark; to his stepson, James Aaron Page; to his
4747 grandchildren, Rhett and Wesley; to his sisters, Julie Moore and
4848 Ann Messer and her husband, Bill; and to his other relatives and
4949 many friends; and, be it further
5050 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5151 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5252 Representatives and Senate adjourn this day, they do so in memory of
5353 Flip Whitworth.
