5	5	WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
6	6	passing of Dr. Robert N. Barnes of Temple on December 27, 2021, at
7	7	the age of 92; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The son of Dewey and Ruth Barnes, Bob Barnes was born
9	9	in Oklahoma City on March 22, 1929, and during his youth, he worked
10	10	odd jobs to help support his family; he completed his bachelor's
11	11	degree at the University of Oklahoma and went on to study internal
12	12	medicine and cardiology at the OU College of Medicine; answering
13	13	his nation's call to duty, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard in
14	14	Seattle, attaining the rank of commander; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Dr. Barnes began his career with the Temple Veterans
16	16	Administration Medical Center in 1960, and he rose to become chief
17	17	of cardiology and assistant chief of internal medicine before his
18	18	retirement in 1993; he also taught classes at the Texas A&M College
19	19	of Medicine for 14 years and was later employed with the Texas
20	20	Department of Aging and Disability Services for more than a decade;
21	21	and
22	22	WHEREAS, Among his many achievements, Dr. Barnes received a
23	23	number of honors in recognition of his work as an educator,
24	24	including the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M
25	25	University Distinguished Teaching Award and the Baylor Scott &
26	26	White Health Interns and Residents Best Clinical Physician and
27	27	Teacher award; moreover, he was named the Cardiovascular Diseases
28	28	Teacher of the Year by the American Heart Association; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Dr. Barnes was blessed with the love and support of
30	30	his wife, JoAnn, with whom he shared a rewarding marriage that
31	31	spanned 64 years; he took great pride in their children, David and
32	32	Dianne, and with the passage of time, he had the pleasure of
33	33	welcoming into his family three grandchildren, Kristine, Danielle,
34	34	and Kathleen, and two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Lorelai; and
35	35	WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, Dr. Barnes was a longtime
36	36	member of First Baptist Church of Temple, where he served as a
37	37	deacon; in addition, he and his wife established and led the
38	38	church's Sunday school couples class; in his leisure hours, he
39	39	enjoyed studying classical music and composers, building model
40	40	train landscapes, collecting stamps and rare coins, and cheering on
41	41	the OU Sooners and the Dallas Cowboys; and
42	42	WHEREAS, While the death of Bob Barnes brings great sadness
43	43	to his family and friends, he leaves behind a legacy that will long
44	44	be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Robert N.
47	47	Barnes and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it
48	48	further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
51	51	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bob Barnes.
