44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
66 passing of Dr. Robert N. Barnes of Temple on December 27, 2021, at
77 the age of 92; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Dewey and Ruth Barnes, Bob Barnes was born
99 in Oklahoma City on March 22, 1929, and during his youth, he worked
1010 odd jobs to help support his family; he completed his bachelor's
1111 degree at the University of Oklahoma and went on to study internal
1212 medicine and cardiology at the OU College of Medicine; answering
1313 his nation's call to duty, he served with the U.S. Coast Guard in
1414 Seattle, attaining the rank of commander; and
1515 WHEREAS, Dr. Barnes began his career with the Temple Veterans
1616 Administration Medical Center in 1960, and he rose to become chief
1717 of cardiology and assistant chief of internal medicine before his
1818 retirement in 1993; he also taught classes at the Texas A&M College
1919 of Medicine for 14 years and was later employed with the Texas
2020 Department of Aging and Disability Services for more than a decade;
2121 and
2222 WHEREAS, Among his many achievements, Dr. Barnes received a
2323 number of honors in recognition of his work as an educator,
2424 including the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M
2525 University Distinguished Teaching Award and the Baylor Scott &
2626 White Health Interns and Residents Best Clinical Physician and
2727 Teacher award; moreover, he was named the Cardiovascular Diseases
2828 Teacher of the Year by the American Heart Association; and
2929 WHEREAS, Dr. Barnes was blessed with the love and support of
3030 his wife, JoAnn, with whom he shared a rewarding marriage that
3131 spanned 64 years; he took great pride in their children, David and
3232 Dianne, and with the passage of time, he had the pleasure of
3333 welcoming into his family three grandchildren, Kristine, Danielle,
3434 and Kathleen, and two great-grandchildren, Lucas and Lorelai; and
3535 WHEREAS, A man of deep faith, Dr. Barnes was a longtime
3636 member of First Baptist Church of Temple, where he served as a
3737 deacon; in addition, he and his wife established and led the
3838 church's Sunday school couples class; in his leisure hours, he
3939 enjoyed studying classical music and composers, building model
4040 train landscapes, collecting stamps and rare coins, and cheering on
4141 the OU Sooners and the Dallas Cowboys; and
4242 WHEREAS, While the death of Bob Barnes brings great sadness
4343 to his family and friends, he leaves behind a legacy that will long
4444 be treasured by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4646 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Robert N.
4747 Barnes and extend heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones; and, be it
4848 further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bob Barnes.
