5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The life of a legendary high school football coach |

6 | 6 | | and athletic director drew to a close with the passing of Raymond |

7 | 7 | | Mel Maxfield on December 11, 2022, at the age of 64; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mel Maxfield was born in Kenedy on October 30, 1958, |
---|
9 | 9 | | the son of G. W. and Anna Belle Maxfield; he graduated from Gorman |
---|
10 | 10 | | High School, where he was a quarterback and safety on the Tiger |
---|
11 | 11 | | football team, and he went on to play for The University of Texas at |
---|
12 | 12 | | Arlington while earning his bachelor's degree; he later received a |
---|
13 | 13 | | master's degree from East Texas State University; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Maxfield devoted himself to mentoring young |
---|
15 | 15 | | athletes for more than four decades; his noteworthy career |
---|
16 | 16 | | encompassed 8 years with the Weatherford Independent School |
---|
17 | 17 | | District, 15 years with Forney ISD, 8 years with Burleson ISD, 9 |
---|
18 | 18 | | years with Amarillo ISD, and 1 year with Monahans-Wickett-Pyote |
---|
19 | 19 | | ISD; after initially retiring in 2019, he later worked with other |
---|
20 | 20 | | districts, including two years with Bangs ISD; overall, he guided |
---|
21 | 21 | | his football teams to more than 250 victories and was the winningest |
---|
22 | 22 | | coach in the Texas Panhandle at the time of his retirement; and |
---|
23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In recognition of his exemplary achievements, |
---|
24 | 24 | | Mr. Maxfield was honored in 2016 with the Tom Landry Award from the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Texas High School Coaches Association; he was also the recipient of |
---|
26 | 26 | | the 2006 Nike Coach of the Year award and multiple University |
---|
27 | 27 | | Interscholastic League Coach of the Year accolades; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Valuing family above all else, Mr. Maxfield |
---|
29 | 29 | | benefited from the love and support of his wife, Jill, with whom he |
---|
30 | 30 | | shared more than three decades of marriage, and the couple were |
---|
31 | 31 | | blessed with four children, Payton, Kylie, Max, and Reece; in all |
---|
32 | 32 | | his endeavors, he drew strength from his Christian faith; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, A highly respected figure in Texas high school |
---|
34 | 34 | | football, Mel Maxfield made a positive difference in the lives of |
---|
35 | 35 | | countless students and fellow coaches, and he leaves behind a |
---|
36 | 36 | | legacy that will resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Raymond Mel |
---|
39 | 39 | | Maxfield and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his |
---|
40 | 40 | | family: to his wife, Jill Maxfield; to his children, Payton |
---|
41 | 41 | | Maxfield, Kylie Maxfield, Max Maxfield, and Reece Maxfield; and to |

42 | 42 | | his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
