55 WHEREAS, The life of a legendary high school football coach
66 and athletic director drew to a close with the passing of Raymond
77 Mel Maxfield on December 11, 2022, at the age of 64; and
88 WHEREAS, Mel Maxfield was born in Kenedy on October 30, 1958,
99 the son of G. W. and Anna Belle Maxfield; he graduated from Gorman
1010 High School, where he was a quarterback and safety on the Tiger
1111 football team, and he went on to play for The University of Texas at
1212 Arlington while earning his bachelor's degree; he later received a
1313 master's degree from East Texas State University; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Maxfield devoted himself to mentoring young
1515 athletes for more than four decades; his noteworthy career
1616 encompassed 8 years with the Weatherford Independent School
1717 District, 15 years with Forney ISD, 8 years with Burleson ISD, 9
1818 years with Amarillo ISD, and 1 year with Monahans-Wickett-Pyote
1919 ISD; after initially retiring in 2019, he later worked with other
2020 districts, including two years with Bangs ISD; overall, he guided
2121 his football teams to more than 250 victories and was the winningest
2222 coach in the Texas Panhandle at the time of his retirement; and
2323 WHEREAS, In recognition of his exemplary achievements,
2424 Mr. Maxfield was honored in 2016 with the Tom Landry Award from the
2525 Texas High School Coaches Association; he was also the recipient of
2626 the 2006 Nike Coach of the Year award and multiple University
2727 Interscholastic League Coach of the Year accolades; and
2828 WHEREAS, Valuing family above all else, Mr. Maxfield
2929 benefited from the love and support of his wife, Jill, with whom he
3030 shared more than three decades of marriage, and the couple were
3131 blessed with four children, Payton, Kylie, Max, and Reece; in all
3232 his endeavors, he drew strength from his Christian faith; and
3333 WHEREAS, A highly respected figure in Texas high school
3434 football, Mel Maxfield made a positive difference in the lives of
3535 countless students and fellow coaches, and he leaves behind a
3636 legacy that will resonate for years to come; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3838 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Raymond Mel
3939 Maxfield and extend heartfelt sympathy to the members of his
4040 family: to his wife, Jill Maxfield; to his children, Payton
4141 Maxfield, Kylie Maxfield, Max Maxfield, and Reece Maxfield; and to
4242 his other relatives and friends; and, be it further
4343 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4444 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4545 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Mel
4646 Maxfield.
