5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Former State Representative Robert R. Turner of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Voss, an ardent champion of rural Texas, passed away on |
---|
7 | 7 | | June 19, 2022, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Coleman on August 10, 1934, Bob Turner was |
---|
9 | 9 | | the son of Willard and Helen Turner; after graduating from high |
---|
10 | 10 | | school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and rose to the rank of |
---|
11 | 11 | | lieutenant colonel during almost 35 years in the military; he |
---|
12 | 12 | | commanded a reserve unit, the 490th Civil Affairs Company, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | received the prestigious Silver Cross of Honor from Germany's armed |
---|
14 | 14 | | forces for his work in negotiations among the U.S., NATO, and |
---|
15 | 15 | | Germany during the Cold War; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Turner established Bob Turner's Western Wear in |
---|
17 | 17 | | 1958 and ran the business for two decades; subsequently, he focused |
---|
18 | 18 | | on farming and ranching at the old homestead in Voss; he benefited |
---|
19 | 19 | | his community as president of the local school board and of the |
---|
20 | 20 | | chamber of commerce; having distinguished himself as vice president |
---|
21 | 21 | | of the Texas Farm Bureau, he was urged to enter a special election |
---|
22 | 22 | | for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1991; throughout |
---|
23 | 23 | | his 12-year tenure in office, he was a tireless advocate for his |
---|
24 | 24 | | constituents and all rural Texans; he chaired the Public Safety |
---|
25 | 25 | | Committee and served as vice chair of both the Land and Resource |
---|
26 | 26 | | Management Committee and the Select Committee on Military and |
---|
27 | 27 | | Veterans Affairs; his legislative accomplishments included bills |
---|
28 | 28 | | to enhance property rights, create a statewide insurance pool for |
---|
29 | 29 | | rural fire departments, and establish the Office of Rural Community |
---|
30 | 30 | | Affairs; in 1995, he secured passage of a bill that penalized |
---|
31 | 31 | | statements about agricultural products when proved false, |
---|
32 | 32 | | disparaging, and economically harmful; while in office, he loved to |
---|
33 | 33 | | talk up his famously hardworking staff, and even after he retired, |
---|
34 | 34 | | he continued to gather with them to catch up and reminisce; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, In his next chapter, Mr. Turner founded a consulting |
---|
36 | 36 | | company to continue his efforts in behalf of rural interests; he |
---|
37 | 37 | | enjoyed working with such organizations as the Texas Sheep and Goat |
---|
38 | 38 | | Raisers Association, the Independent Cattlemen's Association, and |
---|
39 | 39 | | the Earthmoving Contractors Association of Texas; in addition, he |
---|
40 | 40 | | was executive director of the Coleman Development Company; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his first wife, |
---|
42 | 42 | | Ann Holt Turner, and his second wife, Mona Faye Cook Turner; he took |
---|
43 | 43 | | great pride in his three sons, Sam, Darrel, and Gary, as well as his |
---|
44 | 44 | | stepson, Steven Saloman, his seven grandchildren, and his |
---|
45 | 45 | | great-granddaughter; a man of faith, he led the singing at the |
---|
46 | 46 | | Methodist church in Voss, and his sonorous voice could make the |
---|
47 | 47 | | small congregation sound like a mighty choir; he also played |
---|
48 | 48 | | guitar, and back in the day, he often performed on radio station |
---|
49 | 49 | | KSTA and on Slim Willet's show on KRBC; through the years, he kept |
---|
50 | 50 | | in touch with old friends and former colleagues, serving as a father |
---|
51 | 51 | | figure to many and an inspiration to all; and |
---|
52 | 52 | | WHEREAS, Admired for his warmth, kindness, and wonderful |
---|
53 | 53 | | sense of humor, as well as his long record of service, Bob Turner |
---|
54 | 54 | | made a meaningful difference in the lives of countless people, and |
---|
55 | 55 | | his contributions will be remembered for years to come; now, |
---|
56 | 56 | | therefore, be it |
---|
57 | 57 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
58 | 58 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of the Honorable |
---|
59 | 59 | | Robert R. Turner and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his |
---|
60 | 60 | | passing; and, be it further |
---|
61 | 61 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
62 | 62 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
63 | 63 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Robert R. |
