5	5	WHEREAS, Sonny Dykes, head coach of the Texas Christian
6	6	University football team, achieved great success in 2022, guiding
7	7	the Horned Frogs to the title game of the College Football Playoff
8	8	National Championship; and
9	9	WHEREAS, In his first season at the helm of the program, Coach
10	10	Dykes engineered a remarkable turnaround for his squad; following a
11	11	2021 season in which they recorded a 5-7 record, the Horned Frogs
12	12	improved their win total by eight games and were one of the four
13	13	elite teams to compete for the championship; in its Fiesta Bowl
14	14	semifinal contest, TCU became the first team from Texas to win a CFP
15	15	contest, upsetting the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan
16	16	Wolverines in a thrilling 51-45 shootout to advance to the national
17	17	championship game; at the end of the season, Coach Dykes garnered a
18	18	host of honors, including selection as the Paul "Bear" Bryant Coach
19	19	of the Year, the Associated Press Coach of the Year, and the Big 12
20	20	Coach of the Year; and
21	21	WHEREAS, The son of legendary Texas Tech University football
22	22	coach Spike Dykes, Sonny Dykes began his collegiate coaching career
23	23	at Navarro College, and he went on to work as an assistant coach at
24	24	the University of Arizona, Texas Tech, and the University of
25	25	Kentucky; he took over a struggling Louisiana Tech program in 2010,
26	26	and in his second season, he was selected as the Western Athletic
27	27	Conference Coach of the Year as the Bulldogs won the WAC
28	28	Championship and earned a trip to the Poinsettia Bowl; in advance of
29	29	the 2013 season, he became head coach at the University of
30	30	California, and under his direction, the team's offense set a
31	31	modern-era record for points scored and shattered several school
32	32	records; his first assignment at TCU came as an offensive analyst in
33	33	2017, and he then spent four seasons as head coach at Southern
34	34	Methodist University, where he greatly improved the team's fortunes
35	35	before taking charge of the Horned Frogs' program; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Born in Big Spring, Mr. Dykes received his
37	37	bachelor's degree in history from Texas Tech in 1993 and was a
38	38	member of the Red Raiders baseball team for two seasons; in all his
39	39	endeavors, he enjoys the love and support of his wife, Kate, and
40	40	their three children, Ally, Charlie, and Daniel; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Through his leadership and expertise, Sonny Dykes is
42	42	furthering the tradition of football excellence in North Texas, and
43	43	his many accomplishments are indeed deserving of commendation; now,
44	44	therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby congratulate Sonny Dykes on a successful 2022
47	47	season and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success;
48	48	and, be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for Mr. Dykes as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
