| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Austin are |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | celebrating the 150th anniversary of their church's founding in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, First organized by a group from the Williamson Creek |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | settlement in 1873, the congregation was established as Mt. Zion |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Baptist Church Williamson Creek under the leadership of the |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Reverend Jacob Fontaine; following a devastating flood, the church |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | rebuilt on the north bank of Williamson Creek, and that structure |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | was moved to East 13th Street in 1948 after the congregation |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | relocated to Austin; drawing more and more members, the church |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | moved into a larger sanctuary in 1979, and the old church building |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | was subsequently converted into the S. A. Davis Fellowship Hall; |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | over the years, the church has continued to expand its facilities to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | accommodate the needs of its growing membership; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Since its founding, Mt. Zion Baptist Church has |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | benefited from the dedicated efforts of many outstanding clergy, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | including the Reverend Dr. Daryl L. Horton, who has led the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | congregation since 2021; united by their shared faith and strong |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | traditions, the members of this notable house of worship have |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | established such commendable programs as the Ace Team, the Mt. Zion |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Action and Resource Center, and Partners in Education; moreover, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the church contributes to charitable organizations ranging from the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Salvation Army to the NAACP; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Countless area residents have looked to Mt. Zion |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Baptist Church for spiritual guidance over the years, and it is a |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | pleasure to join in honoring the church at this special time in its |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | rich history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mt. Zion |

| 34 | 34 | | Baptist Church in Austin and extend to its members sincere best |
