| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, May 2023 has been set aside as Asian American and |

| 6 | 6 | | Pacific Islander Heritage Month to recognize the accomplishments |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and wide-ranging contributions of individuals who trace their |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | ancestry to Asia and the Pacific Islands; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Originally established by the United States |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Congress as Asian-Pacific American Heritage Week, the observance |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | celebrates the diverse culture, traditions, and history of people |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | from the Asian continent and the islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and Polynesia in the Pacific; it was officially expanded into a |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | monthlong celebration in 1992; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The month of May was chosen for this commemorative |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | period because of two key events in our nation's history; on May 7, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | 1843, the first Japanese immigrants arrived in the U.S., and on May |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 10, 1869, a workforce largely composed of Chinese laborers |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | completed the Transcontinental Railroad; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, According to a 2022 U.S. Census Bureau estimate, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | around 6.2 percent of Americans identify as Asian, Native Hawaiian, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | or Pacific Islander, with approximately 24 million Americans |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | claiming Asian ancestry and nearly 1.6 million tracing their |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | origins to Hawaii, Guam, Samoa, or other Pacific Islands; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The Lone Star State is home to generations of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Americans who take great pride in their family roots in Asia and the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Pacific Islands, and this annual observance provides a welcome |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | opportunity to celebrate their significant contributions to the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | prosperity and cultural vibrancy of our nation; now, therefore, be |
