| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Washington's Birthday Celebration Association, |

| 6 | 6 | | in conjunction with its affiliated organizations, is presenting |

| 7 | 7 | | Laredo's 125th commemoration of George Washington's birthday from |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | January 19 through March 4, 2023; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Every year, citizens of Laredo mark the birthday of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Father of Our Country, in tribute to a champion of liberty who |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | is revered in countries throughout the Americas; for nearly a |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | century, the observance has been organized by the Washington's |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Birthday Celebration Association, which is led this year by its |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | 2022-2023 president, D. Matthew Gibson; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Since the celebration's beginning as a two-day |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | affair in 1898, it has gradually evolved into a grand festival |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | encompassing numerous events and drawing some 400,000 people; those |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | attending the festivities enjoy marching bands and parade floats, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | spectacular fireworks displays, food, games, and performances by |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | entertainers from both sides of the border; additionally, the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | association annually selects two individuals to portray George and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Martha Washington at various celebration events, and this year the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | honor has gone to Jose A. Palacios Jr. and Linda Cristina Benavides |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Alexander; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Other 2023 ambassadors include Leila Leigh Graham |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and Ricardo Ferdin Jr., who will portray Princess Pocahontas and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the Peace Maker Chief of all Nations; the parts of the Abrazo |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Children will be played by Mila Fernanda Garcia and Francisco |

| 29 | 29 | | Marcel Gonzalez Flores, who are representing the United States, and |

| 30 | 30 | | by Andressa Maria Vazquez Urteaga and Jeremiah Cabrera, who are |

| 31 | 31 | | representing Mexico; and |

| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, This much-anticipated celebration exemplifies the |

| 33 | 33 | | spirit and enthusiasm of Laredoans and the pride they take in their |

| 34 | 34 | | city and country; now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby recognize the members of the Washington's |

| 37 | 37 | | Birthday Celebration Association for their patriotism and |

| 38 | 38 | | dedication and extend to them sincere best wishes for a joyous 125th |
