5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
---|
6 | 6 | | 88th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Navarro County and |
---|
7 | 7 | | to honor its residents for the important contributions they are |
---|
8 | 8 | | making to the Lone Star State; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state |
---|
10 | 10 | | legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José |
---|
11 | 11 | | Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence; |
---|
12 | 12 | | two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the |
---|
13 | 13 | | creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by |
---|
14 | 14 | | Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping |
---|
16 | 16 | | center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central |
---|
17 | 17 | | Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an |
---|
18 | 18 | | effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the |
---|
19 | 19 | | discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state |
---|
20 | 20 | | of Texas, and it forever changed the economy and destiny of Navarro |
---|
21 | 21 | | County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped |
---|
22 | 22 | | from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas history; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and |
---|
25 | 25 | | agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops |
---|
26 | 26 | | grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat, |
---|
27 | 27 | | sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy |
---|
28 | 28 | | cows, and horses; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational |
---|
30 | 30 | | opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational |
---|
31 | 31 | | activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and |
---|
32 | 32 | | Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating |
---|
33 | 33 | | history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum and |
---|
34 | 34 | | Pioneer Village; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, With a colorful history, an abundance of natural |
---|
36 | 36 | | resources, and an inviting atmosphere, Navarro County is a |
---|
37 | 37 | | desirable community in which to live and work, and its residents may |
---|
38 | 38 | | indeed take great pride in the place they call home; now, therefore, |
---|
39 | 39 | | be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby recognize Navarro County and extend to its |
---|
42 | 42 | | citizens sincere best wishes for the future. |
