44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the
66 88th Texas Legislature are pleased to recognize Navarro County and
77 to honor its residents for the important contributions they are
88 making to the Lone Star State; and
99 WHEREAS, Established with the approval of the state
1010 legislature on April 25, 1846, Navarro County was named after José
1111 Antonio Navarro, a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence;
1212 two years later, a 100-acre plot of land was donated for the
1313 creation of a county seat, with the name, Corsicana, chosen by
1414 Navarro to honor his father's birthplace on the isle of Corsica; and
1515 WHEREAS, The community developed as a trading and shipping
1616 center after the completion of the Houston and Texas Central
1717 Railroad in 1871; substantial population growth followed, and an
1818 effort was made to drill for groundwater; this drilling led to the
1919 discovery of oil, and consequently, the first oil boom in the state
2020 of Texas, and it forever changed the economy and destiny of Navarro
2121 County; more than 200 million barrels of oil have since been pumped
2222 from the county, which claims the longest continuous oil flow in
2323 Texas history; and
2424 WHEREAS, Today, petroleum, diversified manufacturing, and
2525 agriculture continue to bolster the economy; among the varied crops
2626 grown in the region's fertile black loam are corn, cotton, wheat,
2727 sorghum, and sunflowers, and local ranches raise beef cattle, dairy
2828 cows, and horses; and
2929 WHEREAS, Residents of the area benefit from the educational
3030 opportunities provided by Navarro College and the recreational
3131 activities found at Navarro Mills Lake, Lake Halbert, and
3232 Richland-Chambers Reservoir; in addition, the county's fascinating
3333 history is preserved at such attractions as the Pearce Museum and
3434 Pioneer Village; and
3535 WHEREAS, With a colorful history, an abundance of natural
3636 resources, and an inviting atmosphere, Navarro County is a
3737 desirable community in which to live and work, and its residents may
3838 indeed take great pride in the place they call home; now, therefore,
3939 be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby recognize Navarro County and extend to its
4242 citizens sincere best wishes for the future.
