44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Dr. Michael J. Keating, a clinical professor and
66 researcher who has earned acclaim for his transformative
77 contributions to the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, is
88 retiring in 2023, after nearly five decades of service at The
99 University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and
1010 WHEREAS, During the last 30 years of his career, Dr. Keating
1111 has dedicated himself to the study of chronic lymphocytic leukemia
1212 (CLL) in hopes of improving survival rates and one day developing a
1313 cure for the disease; his research has yielded groundbreaking
1414 findings related to the use of fludarabine to treat CLL patients,
1515 and in only a few decades, the efforts of Dr. Keating and other
1616 researchers have revolutionized the medical community's
1717 understanding of CLL and helped improve the complete remission rate
1818 from this type of cancer from 5 percent to more than 50 percent; and
1919 WHEREAS, While survival rates for CLL have greatly increased,
2020 Dr. Keating has remained committed to the search for a cure for CLL,
2121 which has resulted in the development of highly effective,
2222 low-toxicity drugs that are in common use today; he established the
2323 CLL Global Research Foundation, which to date has provided more
2424 than $31 million to researchers all over the world who are making
2525 significant strides in CLL research; and
2626 WHEREAS, Dr. Keating has been recognized with numerous
2727 accolades for his achievements, including the Service to Mankind
2828 Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America in 1988; he
2929 was also a recipient of the Charles A. LeMaistre Outstanding
3030 Achievement Award in Cancer and the Rai Binet Medal in 2002 and was
3131 honored by his peers as one of the "Giants of Cancer Care" in 2018;
3232 along the way, he has earned the admiration of his patients for his
3333 warmth, empathy, and optimism; and
3434 WHEREAS, A native of Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Keating
3535 obtained a medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1966;
3636 he completed medical residencies in Australia before coming to the
3737 United States to serve as a Fellow at MD Anderson Cancer Center in
3838 1974; in all his endeavors, he enjoys the support of a loving family
3939 that includes his fiancée, Shari, his four children, and his five
4040 grandchildren; and
4141 WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Keating's tireless dedication to his
4242 profession has made him a champion for patients with CLL and a
4343 driving force in CLL research, and his many accomplishments will
4444 continue to resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4646 Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Michael J. Keating on his
4747 retirement from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
4848 and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it
4949 further
5050 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5151 prepared for Dr. Keating as an expression of high regard by the
5252 Texas House of Representatives.
