5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Michael J. Keating, a clinical professor and |
---|
6 | 6 | | researcher who has earned acclaim for his transformative |
---|
7 | 7 | | contributions to the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia, is |
---|
8 | 8 | | retiring in 2023, after nearly five decades of service at The |
---|
9 | 9 | | University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, During the last 30 years of his career, Dr. Keating |
---|
11 | 11 | | has dedicated himself to the study of chronic lymphocytic leukemia |
---|
12 | 12 | | (CLL) in hopes of improving survival rates and one day developing a |
---|
13 | 13 | | cure for the disease; his research has yielded groundbreaking |
---|
14 | 14 | | findings related to the use of fludarabine to treat CLL patients, |
---|
15 | 15 | | and in only a few decades, the efforts of Dr. Keating and other |
---|
16 | 16 | | researchers have revolutionized the medical community's |
---|
17 | 17 | | understanding of CLL and helped improve the complete remission rate |
---|
18 | 18 | | from this type of cancer from 5 percent to more than 50 percent; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, While survival rates for CLL have greatly increased, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Dr. Keating has remained committed to the search for a cure for CLL, |
---|
21 | 21 | | which has resulted in the development of highly effective, |
---|
22 | 22 | | low-toxicity drugs that are in common use today; he established the |
---|
23 | 23 | | CLL Global Research Foundation, which to date has provided more |
---|
24 | 24 | | than $31 million to researchers all over the world who are making |
---|
25 | 25 | | significant strides in CLL research; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Keating has been recognized with numerous |
---|
27 | 27 | | accolades for his achievements, including the Service to Mankind |
---|
28 | 28 | | Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America in 1988; he |
---|
29 | 29 | | was also a recipient of the Charles A. LeMaistre Outstanding |
---|
30 | 30 | | Achievement Award in Cancer and the Rai Binet Medal in 2002 and was |
---|
31 | 31 | | honored by his peers as one of the "Giants of Cancer Care" in 2018; |
---|
32 | 32 | | along the way, he has earned the admiration of his patients for his |
---|
33 | 33 | | warmth, empathy, and optimism; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A native of Melbourne, Australia, Dr. Keating |
---|
35 | 35 | | obtained a medical degree from the University of Melbourne in 1966; |
---|
36 | 36 | | he completed medical residencies in Australia before coming to the |
---|
37 | 37 | | United States to serve as a Fellow at MD Anderson Cancer Center in |
---|
38 | 38 | | 1974; in all his endeavors, he enjoys the support of a loving family |
---|
39 | 39 | | that includes his fiancée, Shari, his four children, and his five |
---|
40 | 40 | | grandchildren; and |
---|
41 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Keating's tireless dedication to his |
---|
42 | 42 | | profession has made him a champion for patients with CLL and a |
---|
43 | 43 | | driving force in CLL research, and his many accomplishments will |
---|
44 | 44 | | continue to resonate in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
46 | 46 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Michael J. Keating on his |
---|
47 | 47 | | retirement from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center |
---|
48 | 48 | | and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
