44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, During the devastating winter storm that impacted
66 Texas communities in late January and early February 2023, local
77 first responders made extraordinary efforts to save lives and
88 property and bring urgent relief to their fellow citizens in need;
99 and
1010 WHEREAS, The storm, which brought frigid temperatures and
1111 significant freezing rain to Central Texas, was a horrific icing
1212 event; the historic amount of freezing precipitation caused ice to
1313 accumulate on trees and power lines, severely damaging
1414 infrastructure and resulting in blackouts that affected hundreds of
1515 thousands of homes throughout Austin and Travis County; and
1616 WHEREAS, During the multiday event, many residents were
1717 forced to contend with the cold temperatures without heat or
1818 electricity and were unable to travel on the icy roadways to obtain
1919 food or other essential items; in addition, fallen branches blocked
2020 roadways and littered properties throughout the area; despite
2121 facing hardships of their own, emergency medical personnel, police,
2222 and firefighters continued to carry out their lifesaving work,
2323 persevering through the cold and sometimes dangerous conditions to
2424 rescue citizens and complete other vital duties; and
2525 WHEREAS, Central Texans are profoundly grateful for the
2626 courageous individuals who went above and beyond during this
2727 challenging time, and the region's first responders are truly
2828 deserving of recognition for their selfless contributions to the
2929 relief effort; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3131 Legislature hereby commend the police, firefighters, emergency
3232 medical personnel, and other first responders who helped their
3333 communities endure the winter storm of late January and early
3434 February 2023 and extend sincere best wishes to these heroic men and
3535 women for continued success in their important work.
