55 WHEREAS, Millions of individuals around the world are
66 celebrating Eid al-Fitr in April 2023 to mark the end of Ramadan,
77 participating in traditions that span many centuries; and
88 WHEREAS, The ninth month of the year in the Islamic lunar
99 calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims reinforce their spiritual
1010 beliefs; they reaffirm their dedication to the collective good and
1111 their commitment to work toward the well-being of people from all
1212 walks of life; and
1313 WHEREAS, Muslims abstain from food and drink from sunrise
1414 until sunset, striving to deepen their faith, practice
1515 self-discipline, and better understand the plight of the poor and
1616 hungry; they break their daily fasts by sharing meals with family
1717 and friends; and
1818 WHEREAS, After a month of fasting, prayer, and
1919 self-reflection, Ramadan concludes with the celebration of Eid
2020 al-Fitr, which falls during the first three days of Shawwal, the
2121 10th month of the Islamic calendar; in Islamic countries,
2222 festivities typically last up to three days, while in the United
2323 States, the observance is generally shorter; this year, Eid al-Fitr
2424 begins at sunset on April 20 and ends at sunset on April 21; and
2525 WHEREAS, Sunrise on the first day of Eid al-Fitr is
2626 solemnized with a communal prayer, salat al-eid; the holiday
2727 continues with official receptions and private visits, greetings of
2828 "Eid Mubarak," and the giving of presents; in addition, it is a time
2929 to visit the final resting places of relatives; some volunteer at
3030 food pantries or perform other acts of charity in the spirit of Eid;
3131 the customs that accompany Ramadan are emblematic of the rich and
3232 diverse traditions that define Muslim cultures; and
3333 WHEREAS, Texas is home to more than 400,000 Muslims, who
3434 contribute in myriad ways to the economic, cultural, and social
3535 fabric of our state, and it is indeed fitting to acknowledge the
3636 profound importance of Ramadan to the members of this vibrant
3737 community as they celebrate with friends, families, and fellow
3838 worshippers; now, therefore, be it
3939 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4040 Legislature hereby recognize Eid al-Fitr 2023 and extend to Muslims
4141 across the State of Texas sincere best wishes for a joyous and
4242 meaningful observance.
