| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Members of the Muslim community from throughout the |

| 7 | 7 | | state are gathering in Austin on January 31, 2023, to celebrate the |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 20th Texas Muslim Capitol Day; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Texans made history in 2022 with the election of the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | first two Muslim Americans to the Texas House of Representatives, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Rep. Suleman Lalani, M.D. (HD 76) and Rep. Salman Bhojani (HD 92); |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, The Muslim community is one of the fastest-growing |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | communities in Texas, with almost 500,000 residents who identify as |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Muslim, constituting 1.7 percent of the state's population; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Muslims in America are one of the most racially |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | diverse communities; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The Muslim community pioneered mathematical |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | concepts such as algebra, the creation of zero, the modern-day |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | decimal point system, calculus, and the concept of raising a number |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | to a power; moreover, the Muslim community developed numerous |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | advancements in astronomy, geography, and medicine; in the 11th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | century, Muslim doctors invented hundreds of surgical tools; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, The unwavering dedication of the leaders from the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Islamic community in the State of Texas has served as an impetus for |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | a more equal and altruistic population; Muslims have held public |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | office in Texas from the local level, such as city council members |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and judges, all the way up to state representatives; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, By bringing their perspectives to the legislative |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | forum, members of the Muslim community are contributing to the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | dialogue on policy issues and helping to work toward a brighter |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | future for all residents of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be |
|---|

| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby recognize January 31, 2023, as Texas Muslim |
