5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A full and generous life drew to a close with the |

6 | 6 | | passing of admired South Dallas restaurateur Elaine Patricia |
---|
7 | 7 | | Campbell on April 9, 2023, at the age of 73; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The daughter of Richard and Louise Campbell, Elaine |
---|
9 | 9 | | Campbell was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on January 4, 1950, and grew |
---|
10 | 10 | | up with seven siblings; she worked in arts and crafts and |
---|
11 | 11 | | demonstrated exceptional talent in the culinary realm; as a young |
---|
12 | 12 | | mother of two, she migrated to the United States with her sons and |
---|
13 | 13 | | her sister, Colleen, and helped one of her brothers manage his |
---|
14 | 14 | | restaurant in New York; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Campbell and her sister moved to Dallas and |
---|
16 | 16 | | opened Elaine's Kitchen on Martin Luther King Boulevard in 1987; |
---|
17 | 17 | | her Jamaican cuisine won a dedicated following, and the restaurant |
---|
18 | 18 | | earned numerous accolades, including recognition by D Magazine as |
---|
19 | 19 | | one of the city's Best Neighborhood Restaurants; in addition, |
---|
20 | 20 | | Ms. Campbell received several awards for her service to the |
---|
21 | 21 | | community; she graciously served everyone who walked through the |
---|
22 | 22 | | doors, even if they could not afford to pay, and extended help to |
---|
23 | 23 | | people when they were struggling; over the years, she provided |
---|
24 | 24 | | housing assistance and financial support to many individuals, along |
---|
25 | 25 | | with plenty of love and encouragement, and she donated food and |
---|
26 | 26 | | funds to multiple community organizations, as well as neighborhood |
---|
27 | 27 | | schools; she was a longtime member of the Dallas Black Chamber of |
---|
28 | 28 | | Commerce and the Caribbean Association; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, The mother of two biological sons, Richie and Gary, |
---|
30 | 30 | | Ms. Campbell adopted two more, Nicholas and Obrian, and she played |
---|
31 | 31 | | a maternal role in the lives of a host of nieces, nephews, |
---|
32 | 32 | | grandchildren, and countless others; she was a marvelous confidant |
---|
33 | 33 | | and endeared herself to all with her laughter and warm smile; for |
---|
34 | 34 | | her 70th birthday, a large circle of friends and relatives traveled |
---|
35 | 35 | | to Jamaica with her for a spectacular celebration; she enjoyed |
---|
36 | 36 | | traveling when she had the opportunity, and she loved cooking, |
---|
37 | 37 | | baking, and watching football; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Elaine Campbell brightened the world for all who |
---|
39 | 39 | | knew her, and although she is deeply missed, her kindness and |
---|
40 | 40 | | compassion will remain a lasting source of inspiration; now, |
---|
41 | 41 | | therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Elaine Patricia |
---|
44 | 44 | | Campbell and extend sincere condolences to the members of her |
---|
45 | 45 | | family: to her biological sons, Calvin "Richie" Hamilton and |
---|
46 | 46 | | Orville "Gary" Hamilton; to her adopted sons, Nicholas and Obrian; |
---|
47 | 47 | | to her siblings, Colleen, Shirley, Claudette, Phillip, and Derek; |
---|
48 | 48 | | to her grandchildren; and to her many other relatives and friends; |
