44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Refugee Advocacy Day is being recognized at the
66 State Capitol on April 20, 2023; and
77 WHEREAS, Over the years, Texans have demonstrated compassion
88 and public spirit in welcoming refugees to the Lone Star State; in
99 turn, those refugees have helped to strengthen the state's economy,
1010 contributing to the success of hundreds of Texas companies and
1111 stimulating the market with a spending power of some $4.6 billion;
1212 and
1313 WHEREAS, Embodying the resilience, determination, and
1414 optimism that have always defined the American spirit, many
1515 refugees have gone on to become business owners and industry
1616 leaders; in addition, the taxes they pay more than compensate for
1717 their use of shared public services, with refugees on average
1818 contributing a net amount of $21,000 during their first 20 years in
1919 the country; and
2020 WHEREAS, Refugees resettled in Texas add to the economic and
2121 cultural richness of our state, and the individuals and
2222 organizations who have helped refugees rebuild their lives here are
2323 indeed deserving of acknowledgment for setting a humanitarian
2424 example that is respected and admired around the world; now,
2525 therefore, be it
2626 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
2727 Legislature hereby recognize April 20, 2023, as Refugee Advocacy
2828 Day at the State Capitol and extend to all those participating in
2929 this event sincere best wishes for the future.
