H.R. No. 1185 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Dr. Karen Lozano of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and her team received a 2022 Lone Star Emmy in the Informational/Instructional category for "La Energía y TÚ"; and WHEREAS, Founded in 2002, the Lone Star Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is one of the largest chapters in the country, serving 19 television markets; it acknowledges high levels of professional achievement annually with its regional Emmy Awards; and WHEREAS, Dr. Lozano is a Julia Beecherl Endowed Professor of mechanical engineering at UTRGV and director of the UTRGV Nanotechnology Center of Excellence; she served as the producer and as an executive producer of "La Energía y TÚ" and also acted in the production; her fellow executive producers were Dr. Arturo Fuentes, professor of mechanical engineering, and Dr. Aaron Massari, a chemistry professor at the University of Minnesota; and WHEREAS, "La Energía y TÚ" is a Spanish-language screen adaptation of "Energy & U," originally a live-action STEM show developed at the University of Minnesota; UTRGV received a National Science Foundation grant to bring it to South Texas, and because of the COVID-19 pandemic, that became a series of virtual presentations for over 15,000 students in kindergarten through sixth grade; the award-winning film version teaches youngsters the First Law of Thermodynamics and other concepts through fun and engaging demonstrations, including numerous explosions and bright flashes accompanied by music and dancing; and WHEREAS, A highly collaborative production, "La Energía Y TÚ" united the efforts of a gifted team, including Jorge Vidal, director/screenplay adaptation/music, Gregory Potter and Jose Sanchez, talent, Charlie Borrego, editor/recording mix engineer, Richard Chavez, animations/graphics, and Mark Hillmyer, David Blank, and Frank Bates, script writers; and WHEREAS, The success of "La Energía y TÚ" demonstrates the broad appeal of STEM education when presented in a creative and captivating form, and this prestigious accolade is a source of pride to the UTRGV community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Karen Lozano and her team on receiving a 2022 Lone Star Emmy for "La Energía y TÚ" and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Dr. Lozano and her team as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
