5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever cherish their |

6 | 6 | | memories of Thora Brigance Payne of Webster, who passed away on June |

7 | 7 | | 17, 2022, at the age of 97; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Knott on June 16, 1925, to Theodore and May |
---|
9 | 9 | | Couch Brigance, the former Thora Brigance grew up with six |
---|
10 | 10 | | siblings, Jean, Edward, Vasta, Veda, Edith, and Nina; she graduated |
---|
11 | 11 | | in 1943 from Wellman High School, where she met the love of her |
---|
12 | 12 | | life, Vernon C. Payne; she attended Texas Tech University while he |
---|
13 | 13 | | was serving in the army, and upon being reunited, the couple wed on |
---|
14 | 14 | | September 15, 1945; during their 57 years of marriage, they raised |
---|
15 | 15 | | two children, Kippy and Doak, and their family later grew to include |
---|
16 | 16 | | a granddaughter, Kristy, and two great-grandchildren, Grayson and |
---|
17 | 17 | | Graham; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, As newlyweds, Mrs. Payne and her husband moved to |
---|
19 | 19 | | Andrews, where he coached the high school basketball team and she |
---|
20 | 20 | | ran a children's clothing store, The Little Shop; she became |
---|
21 | 21 | | actively involved in her children's activities, volunteering as a |
---|
22 | 22 | | den mother, a Girl Scout troop leader, a Sunday school teacher, and |
---|
23 | 23 | | a tennis instructor; she was a woman of boundless energy, and |
---|
24 | 24 | | between shuttling her children to their golf and tennis |
---|
25 | 25 | | tournaments, she found time to cook gourmet meals and to hit a hole |
---|
26 | 26 | | in one on the golf course; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The family eventually moved to Waco when Mr. Payne |
---|
28 | 28 | | accepted a position with the Waco Independent School District; |
---|
29 | 29 | | there, Mrs. Payne served as an officer in both the Lake Waco Golf |
---|
30 | 30 | | Association and the Central Texas Women's Golf Association, and she |
---|
31 | 31 | | became a nursing home director at Hill Haven; she and Mr. Payne were |
---|
32 | 32 | | fond of playing bridge, hosting game nights with friends at their |
---|
33 | 33 | | home on Lake Waco, and tending to their beautiful garden together; |
---|
34 | 34 | | and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, Through her optimism and generosity of spirit, Thora |
---|
36 | 36 | | Payne brightened the world for all who were fortunate enough to know |
---|
37 | 37 | | her, and she will forever hold a treasured place in their hearts; |
---|
38 | 38 | | now, therefore, be it |
---|
39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
40 | 40 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Thora Brigance |
---|
41 | 41 | | Payne and extend deepest sympathy to her loved ones; and, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | further |

43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

44 | 44 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |

45 | 45 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Thora |
