5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Alamo are gathering in Austin on |

6 | 6 | | April 26, 2023, to celebrate the City of Alamo Day at the State |
---|
7 | 7 | | Capitol; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Situated in the Rio Grande Valley, the city of Alamo |
---|
9 | 9 | | is located in Hidalgo County and is known as "The Refuge to the |
---|
10 | 10 | | Valley"; the area's first settlers were primarily farmers and |
---|
11 | 11 | | ranchers who were attracted to the region by its fertile land and |
---|
12 | 12 | | abundant water supply; after the arrival of the railroad in the |
---|
13 | 13 | | early 1900s, the area experienced significant growth and |
---|
14 | 14 | | development; in the years that followed, Alamo became an important |
---|
15 | 15 | | agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley, and crops such as |
---|
16 | 16 | | cotton, citrus, and sorghum were major contributors to the local |
---|
17 | 17 | | economy; the city was officially incorporated on May 12, 1924, and |
---|
18 | 18 | | it was named after the Indian-Spanish term for the cottonwood tree; |
---|
19 | 19 | | and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Today, Alamo is a thriving city of nearly 19,500 |
---|
21 | 21 | | citizens that boasts a strong agricultural industry, and it |
---|
22 | 22 | | continues to grow in commerce, ecotourism, and the arts; residents |
---|
23 | 23 | | and visitors alike benefit from its close proximity to a number of |
---|
24 | 24 | | popular tourist attractions, including South Padre Island and the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and outdoor enthusiasts are |
---|
26 | 26 | | drawn to the area for activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and |
---|
27 | 27 | | camping; furthermore, the city has remained true to its cultural |
---|
28 | 28 | | heritage and celebrates its history and traditions with such events |
---|
29 | 29 | | as the annual Alamo Watermelon Festival, which is a |
---|
30 | 30 | | state-sanctioned BBQ cook-off that honors the community's |
---|
31 | 31 | | agricultural roots; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Acknowledging their rich history as they work to |
---|
33 | 33 | | build an even brighter future, the citizens of Alamo are |
---|
34 | 34 | | justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to |
---|
35 | 35 | | honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now, |
---|

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby recognize April 26, 2023, as the City of Alamo |
