44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Proud residents of Alamo are gathering in Austin on
66 April 26, 2023, to celebrate the City of Alamo Day at the State
77 Capitol; and
88 WHEREAS, Situated in the Rio Grande Valley, the city of Alamo
99 is located in Hidalgo County and is known as "The Refuge to the
1010 Valley"; the area's first settlers were primarily farmers and
1111 ranchers who were attracted to the region by its fertile land and
1212 abundant water supply; after the arrival of the railroad in the
1313 early 1900s, the area experienced significant growth and
1414 development; in the years that followed, Alamo became an important
1515 agricultural center in the Rio Grande Valley, and crops such as
1616 cotton, citrus, and sorghum were major contributors to the local
1717 economy; the city was officially incorporated on May 12, 1924, and
1818 it was named after the Indian-Spanish term for the cottonwood tree;
1919 and
2020 WHEREAS, Today, Alamo is a thriving city of nearly 19,500
2121 citizens that boasts a strong agricultural industry, and it
2222 continues to grow in commerce, ecotourism, and the arts; residents
2323 and visitors alike benefit from its close proximity to a number of
2424 popular tourist attractions, including South Padre Island and the
2525 Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and outdoor enthusiasts are
2626 drawn to the area for activities such as hiking, birdwatching, and
2727 camping; furthermore, the city has remained true to its cultural
2828 heritage and celebrates its history and traditions with such events
2929 as the annual Alamo Watermelon Festival, which is a
3030 state-sanctioned BBQ cook-off that honors the community's
3131 agricultural roots; and
3232 WHEREAS, Acknowledging their rich history as they work to
3333 build an even brighter future, the citizens of Alamo are
3434 justifiably proud of their community, and it is indeed fitting to
3535 honor their contributions to the story of the Lone Star State; now,
3636 therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3838 Legislature hereby recognize April 26, 2023, as the City of Alamo
3939 Day at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation
4040 sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay in Austin.
