| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Aromatic L-Amino Acid Decarboxylase (AADC) |

| 6 | 6 | | Deficiency Awareness Day is being observed to focus attention on |

| 7 | 7 | | this rare disease and to help educate the community, physicians, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | and specialists about its symptoms to facilitate early detection; |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a rare genetic neurological |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | disease, and there have been approximately 200 cases of AADC |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Deficiency reported worldwide; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency is a life-limiting, severely |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | debilitating condition that significantly impacts a patient's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | development, motor skills, growth, cognition, and language skills; |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The disease results from an inherited genetic |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | mutation that causes patients to lack the AADC enzyme that is |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | required to create dopamine; without dopamine, patients can never |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | achieve motor milestones like holding their heads up, sitting, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | standing and are unable to develop the ability to communicate or to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | meet the most basic of life's needs; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Patients with AADC Deficiency often have low muscle |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | tone that is unexplained and does not improve; such patients also |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | suffer from involuntary eye movements and developmental delays; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | AADC Deficiency is often mistaken for other diseases like cerebral |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | palsy, epilepsy, or autism; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Patients are diagnosed with AADC Deficiency through |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | genetic and other biochemical tests; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, AADC Deficiency Awareness Day serves as a vital |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | means of helping inform the public and the medical community about |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the condition, and this awareness can help patients who may be |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | experiencing the symptoms of AADC to receive appropriate treatment; |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | now, therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby recognize AADC Deficiency Awareness Day and |
