5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Jo Ann Johnson is retiring from the Houston Parks |
---|
6 | 6 | | and Recreation Department in 2023, drawing to a close an exemplary |
---|
7 | 7 | | career that has spanned more than three decades; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Hired in 1989, Ms. Johnson served as facility |
---|
9 | 9 | | manager for over a year at Sunnyside Community Center and for nine |
---|
10 | 10 | | years at the historic Emancipation Community Center; in her role as |
---|
11 | 11 | | recreation supervisor, she has overseen Godwin, Platou, |
---|
12 | 12 | | Sharpstown, Sunnyside, Cherryhurst, and Lansdale Community |
---|
13 | 13 | | Centers; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has assisted with numerous annual |
---|
15 | 15 | | events hosted by her department and the City of Houston, among them |
---|
16 | 16 | | Tour de Houston, Juneteenth, National Night Out, back-to-school |
---|
17 | 17 | | health fairs, and the Special Olympics; moreover, she has advanced |
---|
18 | 18 | | the mission of Parks and Recreation by forming partnerships with |
---|
19 | 19 | | such organizations as the Chauncy Glover Project, Hire Houston |
---|
20 | 20 | | Youth, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Houston Independent |
---|
21 | 21 | | School District, and the AARP; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dedicated to her profession, Ms. Johnson joined the |
---|
23 | 23 | | Texas Recreation and Park Society, and during her 16 years with the |
---|
24 | 24 | | association, she served on several committees and received a Lone |
---|
25 | 25 | | Star programming award; as a member of its Minorities in Leisure |
---|
26 | 26 | | Services branch, she held a seat on the board for several Texas |
---|
27 | 27 | | districts; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson graduated from Booker T. Washington |
---|
29 | 29 | | High School in 1974; she is the proud mother of three children, |
---|
30 | 30 | | Sophelia Joi Johnson-Dixon, Shavonda Johnson, and Jaron Johnson; a |
---|
31 | 31 | | woman of faith, she has been a valued congregant of Mt. Pilgrim |
---|
32 | 32 | | Missionary Baptist Church for 67 years; and |
---|
33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Through her skill, professionalism, and commitment |
---|
34 | 34 | | to excellence, Jo Ann Johnson has made valuable contributions to |
---|
35 | 35 | | the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and as she embarks on |
---|
36 | 36 | | the next exciting chapter of her life, she may indeed reflect with |
---|
37 | 37 | | pride on her accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
---|
38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
39 | 39 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Jo Ann Johnson on her retirement |
---|
40 | 40 | | from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and extend to her |
---|
41 | 41 | | sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |

42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
