44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Jo Ann Johnson is retiring from the Houston Parks
66 and Recreation Department in 2023, drawing to a close an exemplary
77 career that has spanned more than three decades; and
88 WHEREAS, Hired in 1989, Ms. Johnson served as facility
99 manager for over a year at Sunnyside Community Center and for nine
1010 years at the historic Emancipation Community Center; in her role as
1111 recreation supervisor, she has overseen Godwin, Platou,
1212 Sharpstown, Sunnyside, Cherryhurst, and Lansdale Community
1313 Centers; and
1414 WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson has assisted with numerous annual
1515 events hosted by her department and the City of Houston, among them
1616 Tour de Houston, Juneteenth, National Night Out, back-to-school
1717 health fairs, and the Special Olympics; moreover, she has advanced
1818 the mission of Parks and Recreation by forming partnerships with
1919 such organizations as the Chauncy Glover Project, Hire Houston
2020 Youth, the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, the Houston Independent
2121 School District, and the AARP; and
2222 WHEREAS, Dedicated to her profession, Ms. Johnson joined the
2323 Texas Recreation and Park Society, and during her 16 years with the
2424 association, she served on several committees and received a Lone
2525 Star programming award; as a member of its Minorities in Leisure
2626 Services branch, she held a seat on the board for several Texas
2727 districts; and
2828 WHEREAS, Ms. Johnson graduated from Booker T. Washington
2929 High School in 1974; she is the proud mother of three children,
3030 Sophelia Joi Johnson-Dixon, Shavonda Johnson, and Jaron Johnson; a
3131 woman of faith, she has been a valued congregant of Mt. Pilgrim
3232 Missionary Baptist Church for 67 years; and
3333 WHEREAS, Through her skill, professionalism, and commitment
3434 to excellence, Jo Ann Johnson has made valuable contributions to
3535 the Houston Parks and Recreation Department, and as she embarks on
3636 the next exciting chapter of her life, she may indeed reflect with
3737 pride on her accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
3939 Legislature hereby congratulate Jo Ann Johnson on her retirement
4040 from the Houston Parks and Recreation Department and extend to her
4141 sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further
4242 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4343 prepared for Ms. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the
4444 Texas House of Representatives.
