5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of the eighth class of Governor William |
---|
6 | 6 | | P. Clements Jr. Scholars have distinguished themselves through |
---|
7 | 7 | | their commitment to public service and public policy; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, These young men and women are participating in the |
---|
9 | 9 | | Clements Legislative Study Program, which is hosted by the Texas |
---|
10 | 10 | | Conservative Coalition Research Institute; this exemplary program |
---|
11 | 11 | | seeks to train, support, and sustain the next generation of leaders |
---|
12 | 12 | | and public servants, instilling in them the values and work ethic of |
---|
13 | 13 | | former governor William P. Clements Jr.; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Governor Clements overcame the misfortunes that |
---|
15 | 15 | | befell his family during the Great Depression to create the world's |
---|
16 | 16 | | largest offshore drilling company; he won an upset victory to |
---|
17 | 17 | | become the state's first Republican governor since Reconstruction, |
---|
18 | 18 | | bringing his business acumen to state government and focusing on |
---|
19 | 19 | | such issues as sound budgeting, crime prevention, and economic |
---|
20 | 20 | | diversification; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The Clements Legislative Study Program is the only |
---|
22 | 22 | | program of its kind to bring conservative students to Austin so that |
---|
23 | 23 | | they may gain valuable experience in leadership and public service |
---|
24 | 24 | | by working directly with members of the Texas Legislature; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Scholars who have previously completed the Clements |
---|
26 | 26 | | Legislative Study Program now work in a variety of positions in and |
---|
27 | 27 | | around the Texas Legislature, including in the Texas House and |
---|
28 | 28 | | Senate, state agencies, political campaigns, policy research |
---|
29 | 29 | | institutions, and media organizations; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, The program's eighth class consists of Olivia |
---|
31 | 31 | | Alexander, Morghan Armenta, Sydney Baker, Cameron Castillo, |
---|
32 | 32 | | Mika'ele Castro, Mary Grace Davidson, Bailey Halbert, Noah Huerta, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Jacquelyn Pillow, Zane Prince, Leah Shepherd, Trinity Smith, |
---|
34 | 34 | | Madeline Tillman, and Romana Vargas; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, By taking part in this special program, the members |

36 | 36 | | of Governor William P. Clements Jr. Scholars are furthering their |
---|
37 | 37 | | understanding of civics, government, and history, and the knowledge |
---|
38 | 38 | | and skills they learn from their time at the Texas Capitol will |
---|
39 | 39 | | serve them well in the years ahead; now, therefore, be it |

40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

41 | 41 | | Legislature hereby commend the members of the eighth class of |

42 | 42 | | Governor William P. Clements Jr. Scholars for their dedication to |

43 | 43 | | public policy and for their service to their state and nation and |
---|
44 | 44 | | extend to them sincere best wishes for success in all their future |
