55 WHEREAS, The Seven Lakes High School boys' soccer team proved
66 itself one of the finest in Texas by winning the University
77 Interscholastic League 6A state championship on April 15, 2023, at
88 Birkelbach Field in Georgetown; and
99 WHEREAS, The championship victory closed out an
1010 unforgettable year in which the Spartans compiled an exceptional
1111 overall record of 28 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie; after claiming the
1212 District 19-6A title, they carried their momentum into the
1313 postseason, defeating Fort Bend Austin 2-0 in the opening round of
1414 the playoffs; subsequent victories over Houston Bellaire, Katy
1515 Cinco Ranch, League City Clear Springs, and Pasadena Dobie High
1616 Schools secured the team's spot in the state tournament for the
1717 second consecutive season; in the semifinals against Garland Sachse
1818 High School, the Spartans scored twice in overtime to claim a berth
1919 in the title game; and
2020 WHEREAS, Seven Lakes matched up with Dripping Springs High
2121 School with the state crown on the line; following a closely
2222 contested first half, the Spartans snapped a scoreless deadlock in
2323 the 55th minute and knocked in a second goal at the 62-minute mark;
2424 Dripping Springs answered a short time later, but the Spartans'
2525 defense held their opponent at bay the rest of the way to seal a 2-1
2626 victory; with the triumph, the Seven Lakes players secured the
2727 first soccer state title in school history; and
2828 WHEREAS, The Spartans were led by Hunter Merritt, the
2929 championship game Most Valuable Player, who was joined by Gabriel
3030 Gonzalez, Aidan Morrison, and Ben Aviles Vera on the 6A
3131 All-Tournament Team; Seven Lakes also received valuable
3232 contributions throughout the year from the other members of the
3333 roster: Pato Valez, Diego Flamenco, Javier Mestre, Noah Peterson,
3434 Kortay Koc, Noa Stasic, Abdullah Soliman, Daniel Ejerenwa, Cameron
3535 Born, Jesus Duque, Fernando Lazo, Eduardo Davalillo, Sean Carlos
3636 Rivera, Shikhar Gupta, Sebastian Ranz, Alexis Matute, Jack
3737 Robertson, Daniel Farias, Josh Taylor, and Tanner Smith; these
3838 talented student-athletes benefited from the able leadership of
3939 head coach Jimmy Krueger and assistant coaches Darryl Metcalfe and
4040 Jay Kolkman, and the team also received enthusiastic support from
4141 principal Kerri Finnesand and athletic director Jimmy Hamon; and
4242 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
4343 culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
4444 commitment to excellence, and the members of the Seven Lakes
4545 Spartans soccer team will treasure the memory of this
4646 accomplishment for the rest of their lives; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4848 Legislature hereby congratulate the Seven Lakes High School boys'
4949 soccer team on winning the 2023 UIL 6A state championship and extend
5050 to the team's players, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for
5151 continued success; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5353 prepared for the Spartans as an expression of high regard by the
5454 Texas House of Representatives.
