5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of Altrusa International across the Lone |

6 | 6 | | Star State are celebrating 100 years of service to Texas |
---|
7 | 7 | | communities in April 2023; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Altrusa International was founded in Nashville, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Tennessee, in 1917, as a service organization for women dedicated |
---|
10 | 10 | | to the betterment of society; the name "Altrusa" is a portmanteau |
---|
11 | 11 | | combining the words "altruism" and "USA," and the group's motto is |
---|
12 | 12 | | "Patriotism, Efficiency, Service"; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, In April 1923, Austin residents formed the first |
---|
14 | 14 | | Altrusa chapter in Texas; the organization flourished in the Lone |
---|
15 | 15 | | Star State, and over the years, Texas chapters have produced seven |
---|
16 | 16 | | presidents of Altrusa International; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, The state's Altrusa members championed vocational |
---|
18 | 18 | | training to help women enter the workforce during World War II; in |
---|
19 | 19 | | the 1970s, the group adopted literacy as a major focus for its |
---|
20 | 20 | | efforts; and |
---|
21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Today, Altrusa International has more than 30 clubs |
---|
22 | 22 | | across Texas; the membership of almost 800 women and men provides |
---|
23 | 23 | | over 81,000 volunteer hours annually; while maintaining an emphasis |
---|
24 | 24 | | on reading and literacy programs for children and adults, members |
---|
25 | 25 | | also work in behalf of such projects as higher education |
---|
26 | 26 | | scholarships and alleviating hunger and homelessness; in addition, |
---|
27 | 27 | | Altrusa sponsors nine Astra clubs that offer opportunities for |
---|
28 | 28 | | service and leadership development to Texas youth from 13 to 21 |
---|
29 | 29 | | years of age; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Over the course of the past century, Altrusa |
---|
31 | 31 | | International members have made a positive difference in numerous |
---|
32 | 32 | | Texas communities, and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing this |
---|
33 | 33 | | momentous milestone in the group's history; now, therefore, be it |
---|
34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby honor Altrusa International for 100 years of |
---|
36 | 36 | | service in the Lone Star State and extend to the members sincere |
---|
37 | 37 | | best wishes for continued success in their noteworthy endeavors; |
