| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage |

| 6 | 6 | | Month, and OCA-Greater Houston is hosting AAPI Heritage Advocacy |

| 7 | 7 | | Day at the State Capitol on May 10, 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, AAPI Heritage Month celebrates the diverse culture, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | traditions, and history of people from the Asian continent and the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | islands of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia in the Pacific, and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | it recognizes members of the AAPI community for their many |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | contributions to our state and nation; AAPI Heritage Advocacy Day, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | which is led by OCA-Greater Houston, unites various AAPI |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | organizations in advocating for legislative policies that address |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | health, civil rights, education, arts, and other issues; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Texas is home to dozens of AAPI groups that conduct |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | meaningful work for their communities and share a common goal of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | supporting members of the AAPI population across the state; a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | chapter of OCA-Asian Pacific American Advocates, OCA-Greater |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Houston was established in 1979 to meet the needs of local AAPIs at |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | all stages of their lives; the volunteer-driven organization's many |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | services include leadership training, education workshops, legal |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | clinics, internships, scholarships, mentoring and civic engagement |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | programs, and advocacy initiatives; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, For nearly four and a half decades, OCA-Greater |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Houston has worked to increase the leadership, civic participation, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | education, and engagement of AAPIs in the Greater Houston |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | metropolitan area, and it is a pleasure to honor this outstanding |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | organization on the occasion of AAPI Heritage Advocacy Day; now, |

| 30 | 30 | | therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |

| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 10, 2023, as Asian American and |
