| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The observance of Vietnamese American Day at the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | State Capitol on May 17, 2023, provides a welcome opportunity to |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | recognize the wide-ranging contributions that Vietnamese Americans |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | have made to the history and vitality of Texas; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The state has a long and storied history of |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Vietnamese immigration that dates back to the late 1970s and early |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 1980s, when many Vietnamese refugees were resettled in Texas, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | particularly in Houston and Dallas, following the fall of Saigon |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and the end of the Vietnam War; today, Texas boasts the second |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | largest Vietnamese American population in the country, with more |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | than 210,000 Vietnamese American residents, and Houston and Dallas |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | are home to thriving Vietnamese American communities; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans have faced many hardships |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | along the way, including language barriers, discrimination, and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | cultural differences, and despite those challenges, they have built |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | prosperous communities and have become active participants in civic |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | life; through their determination, leadership, and strong |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | entrepreneurial skills, they have made significant contributions |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | to the state's economy in areas such as small business ownership, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | workforce development, and international trade; Vietnamese |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Americans have further contributed to their communities by serving |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | as elected officials, law enforcement officers, and military |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | personnel, as well as by supporting education, health care, and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | social services, and they have demonstrated a strong commitment to |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | uplifting all Texans, particularly those facing adversity; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | moreover, they have helped enrich the state's cultural diversity |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | through their food, music, art, and language; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, The Vietnamese American community has contributed |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | immeasurably to the prosperity and vibrancy of the Lone Star State, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | and they may indeed take pride in their instrumental role in the |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | story of Texas; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby recognize May 17, 2023, as Vietnamese American |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Day at the State Capitol. |
