| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of McMullen County are gathering in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Austin to celebrate McMullen County Day at the State Capitol on |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | February 8, 2023; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Located in the center of South Texas, McMullen |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | County is made up of more than 1,000 square miles of flat and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | rolling brushland; artifacts discovered in the county indicate that |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | human settlement dates back perhaps as far as 11,000 years, with |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | groups of hunter-gatherers in the area until the 1700s; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Several Spanish expeditions passed through the area |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | in the 17th and 18th centuries, but the population was sparse until |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | shortly before the Civil War, when settlers began to move in to take |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | advantage of the grasslands where wild mustangs and cattle could be |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | found; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, The county was established in 1858, and a group of |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | resourceful adventurers settled where the Leoncita Creek flowed |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | into the Rio Frio; the town was first called Rio Frio, then Dog |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Town, and finally Tilden, after Samuel J. (Whispering Sammy) |

| 22 | 22 | | Tilden, the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for president in |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 1876; the town eventually became the county seat; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Cattle and sheep ranching have dominated the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | county's economy, though oil and gas have grown in importance since |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | the 1930s, and the region is also a destination for hunters; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, McMullen County residents are stewards of an area of |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | fascinating history and culture, and their unique county merits |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 8, 2023, as McMullen County |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Day at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to the visiting |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | delegation for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
