55 WHEREAS, The Hidalgo Early College High School boys' soccer
66 team closed out an unforgettable year by winning the 2023
77 University Interscholastic League 4A state championship; and
88 WHEREAS, Following an impressive showing during the regular
99 season, the Pirates continued to excel in the playoffs, besting
1010 Rockport-Fulton, Progreso, Jubilee-Brownsville, and Austin Achieve
1111 High Schools to reach the regional final; there, Hidalgo defeated
1212 two-time defending state champion Boerne High to punch its ticket
1313 to the state tournament in Georgetown; in the semifinals, the team
1414 posted a 1-0 win over San Elizario and advanced to the state final;
1515 and
1616 WHEREAS, On April 14, Hidalgo battled Palestine High School
1717 for the 4A crown at Birkelbach Field; the Pirates took command
1818 early, racking up three goals midway through the first half and
1919 relying on their stingy defense to seal the outcome; emerging
2020 triumphant by the final score of 3-0, the Hidalgo players hoisted
2121 the state championship trophy for the second time in program
2222 history, adding to the title the school won in 2009; and
2323 WHEREAS, Hidalgo was led by Reynaldo Cantu, the Championship
2424 Game Most Valuable Player, who joined Ailton Cardenas, Gabriel
2525 Ordonez, and Joaquin Rosales on the 4A All-Tournament Team; the
2626 Pirates also received valuable contributions during the season from
2727 the other members of the roster: Sergio Castaneda, Michael Banda,
2828 Anthony Nava, Sebastian Yanez, Erick Montoya, Matthew Reyes,
2929 Reynaldo Trevino, Ezekiel Gracia, Edson Montoya, Alfonso
3030 Velazquez, Moises Moya, Angel Gonzalez, Santiago Hernandez, Caleb
3131 Hosanna, Alan Espinoza, Pablo Almieda, Angel Rodriguez, Abiel
3232 Guerrero, and Franco Macias; these talented student-athletes were
3333 ably directed by head coach Esteban Alegria and assistant coaches
3434 Guadalupe Amaya, Juan Barron, and David Slovak; and
3535 WHEREAS, Winning a state championship represents the
3636 culmination of countless hours of hard work and an unwavering
3737 commitment to excellence, and the Hidalgo Pirates will treasure the
3838 memory of this accomplishment for the rest of their lives; now,
3939 therefore, be it
4040 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4141 Legislature hereby congratulate the Hidalgo Early College High
4242 School boys' soccer team on winning the 2023 UIL 4A state
4343 championship and extend to the players, coaches, and staff sincere
4444 best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for the Pirates as an expression of high regard by the
4747 Texas House of Representatives.
