44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
66 a close with the passing of John Frank Abbott of Mineola on April
77 21, 2023, at the age of 70; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of John Abbott Jr. and Anne Abbott, John
99 Abbott was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on December 8, 1952, and he grew
1010 up with the companionship of two sisters, Colleen and Kim;
1111 following his graduation from John H. Reagan High School in Austin,
1212 he attended Southwest Texas State University, and he completed his
1313 education at East Texas State University, where he earned a
1414 master's degree in counseling and a doctorate in curriculum and
1515 instruction; and
1616 WHEREAS, In 1974, Dr. Abbott began his long and rewarding
1717 career in education as a Spanish and English teacher at Mineola High
1818 School; he subsequently worked as a counselor in the Alba-Golden
1919 Independent School District, and in 1987, he returned to Mineola
2020 ISD as curriculum director; he went on serve as the district's
2121 superintendent for several years before accepting a position as
2222 director of teacher certification with the Region 7 Educational
2323 Service Center; along the way, he also served as a professor of
2424 education at Texas College in Tyler; he was a teacher at Grand
2525 Saline High School at the time of his passing; and
2626 WHEREAS, Active in his community, Dr. Abbott was a longtime
2727 member of the Kiwanis Club, the Wood County Child Welfare Board, and
2828 the Mineola Caring and Sharing board, and in 2014, he was named
2929 Humanitarian of the Year; a man of deep faith, he was a valued
3030 congregant of First United Methodist Church of Mineola; and
3131 WHEREAS, Above all else, Dr. Abbott was devoted to his wife,
3232 Janell, with whom he shared a fulfilling marriage of nearly four and
3333 a half decades; he loved cooking and traveling in his leisure hours,
3434 having visited numerous countries over the years, and he was known
3535 for his generosity, kindness, and joie de vivre; and
3636 WHEREAS, John Abbott was a man of great compassion who
3737 remained engaged in the world throughout his life and who found joy
3838 and inspiration in helping others, and he will always hold a
3939 treasured place in the hearts of his loved ones and the many
4040 students whose lives he forever enriched; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4242 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Frank Abbott
4343 and extend sincere condolences to all who mourn his passing; and, be
4444 it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John
4848 Abbott.
