| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Members of Habitat for Humanity Texas are |

| 6 | 6 | | celebrating Habitat for Humanity Day on February 7, 2023; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Homeownership plays a significant role in enhancing |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | the quality of life in our communities, and Texas has faced a |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | critical shortage of affordable homes, with a 500,000-home deficit; |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | in addition, one in seven homeowners pay more than half their income |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | on housing; there are many causes for the lack of affordable |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | housing, including issues related to marginalization, land-use |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | policy, inequality, high population density, and natural |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | disasters; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas and its local affiliates |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | strive to help build a better future for people across the state; |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | these organizations unite residents and enable them to construct |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | homes in their communities, and they work to expand access to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | affordable homes through advocacy, resource development, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | education, training, and disaster preparedness and response; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, the Habitat for Humanity network in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Texas has collectively helped over 13,500 families obtain safe |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | housing in 60 areas throughout the state; since 1977, the network |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | has built more than 8,500 new homes, repaired nearly 5,000, and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | rehabilitated almost 600; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Habitat for Humanity Texas has made homeownership a |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | reality for numerous families in the Lone Star State, and the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | dedicated members of the organization are truly deserving of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | recognition for their contributions to this important cause; now, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | therefore, be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 7, 2023, as Habitat For |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Humanity Day and commend all those associated with the organization |
