5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Phyllis Speer Foley is retiring as a kindergarten |
---|
6 | 6 | | teacher with the Leon Independent School District in May 2023, |
---|
7 | 7 | | drawing to a close an exceptional career with the district that has |
---|
8 | 8 | | spanned half a century; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, An alum of Leon ISD, Phyllis Foley was hired to teach |
---|
10 | 10 | | second grade for the district in 1973 after earning her degree in |
---|
11 | 11 | | education from Sam Houston State University; shortly before the |
---|
12 | 12 | | beginning of the school year, she was informed that she would be |
---|
13 | 13 | | launching the district's kindergarten program instead, and she |
---|
14 | 14 | | started the year with no curriculum, no supplies, and more than 20 |
---|
15 | 15 | | eager students; despite the challenges, she persevered and went on |
---|
16 | 16 | | to serve as the district's only kindergarten teacher for the next |
---|
17 | 17 | | several years; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Foley also drove a school bus for Leon ISD, and |
---|
19 | 19 | | while working, she went back to school to obtain a master's degree; |
---|
20 | 20 | | she has taught three generations of local families over the years, |
---|
21 | 21 | | and she has adapted to numerous changes in administration, |
---|
22 | 22 | | requirements, curriculum, and technology, attending many workshops |
---|
23 | 23 | | and training programs along the way; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Foley shared a |
---|
25 | 25 | | rewarding marriage of 47 years with her husband, the late Tommy |
---|
26 | 26 | | Foley, and today she enjoys the love and support of their four |
---|
27 | 27 | | children; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Through her skill, professionalism, and commitment |
---|
29 | 29 | | to excellence, Phyllis Foley has made a profound and positive |
---|
30 | 30 | | difference in the lives of countless young Texans, and her |
---|
31 | 31 | | contributions to the district will resonate for years to come; now, |
---|
32 | 32 | | therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby congratulate kindergarten teacher Phyllis Speer |
---|
35 | 35 | | Foley on her retirement from the Leon Independent School District |
---|
36 | 36 | | and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
