5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Usamah Rodgers has received a 2023 Outstanding |

6 | 6 | | Texan Award for House District 111 from the Texas Legislative Black |

7 | 7 | | Caucus; and |

8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A fitting recipient of this notable honor, |
---|
9 | 9 | | Dr. Rodgers is the superintendent of the DeSoto Independent School |
---|
10 | 10 | | District; over the course of an exemplary career in education that |
---|
11 | 11 | | has spanned more than two decades, she has held several leadership |
---|
12 | 12 | | roles, including dean of instruction, assistant principal, and |
---|
13 | 13 | | campus principal; more recently, she has served as an executive |
---|
14 | 14 | | director and as deputy chief of strategic initiatives for Dallas |
---|
15 | 15 | | ISD, the 14th largest school system in the country; and |
---|
16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, This dynamic educator was integral in designing, |
---|
17 | 17 | | launching, and leading one of largest implementations of the |
---|
18 | 18 | | Pathways in Technology Early College High School programs in the |
---|
19 | 19 | | nation; she participated in the Harvard Principals Institute in |
---|
20 | 20 | | 2009 and has delivered presentations to local, state, and national |
---|
21 | 21 | | conferences about the importance of access, advocacy, equity, and |
---|
22 | 22 | | excellence; in 2020, she was named the best K-12 Education Leader by |
---|
23 | 23 | | The Edvocate, and she was also honored as Teacher of the Year in |
---|
24 | 24 | | 1998 and as Cedar Hill ISD Principal of the Year for 2008-2009; |
---|
25 | 25 | | moreover, she has been recognized by organizations such as the |
---|
26 | 26 | | Future School Leaders Network, the NAACP, the Garland Club of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's |
---|
28 | 28 | | Clubs, the Texas PTA, and Raise Your Hand Texas; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Rodgers holds a bachelor's degree from Missouri |
---|
30 | 30 | | State University and a master's degree and doctorate from The |
---|
31 | 31 | | University of Texas at Austin; active in her community, she is a |
---|
32 | 32 | | member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the National |
---|
33 | 33 | | Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc.; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Through her myriad contributions to education, |
---|
35 | 35 | | Dr. Usamah Rodgers has made a positive difference in the lives of |

36 | 36 | | countless young Texans, and it is a privilege to join in recognizing |
---|
37 | 37 | | an individual who has long been a force for good in her community; |

39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
