44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to
66 a close with the passing of Ola Mae Hunter of Dallas on April 18,
77 2023, at the age of 94; and
88 WHEREAS, The former Ola Brown was born in Hillsboro on April
99 10, 1929, to Berry and Ethel Brown, and she grew up with the
1010 companionship of eight siblings; she moved to Dallas with her
1111 paternal aunt at the age of 12, and after graduating from Booker T.
1212 Washington High School in 1947, she enrolled at Bishop College,
1313 where she earned a bachelor's degree in religion and met the love of
1414 her life, Wardell Hunter; the couple exchanged wedding vows in
1515 February 1950, and they ultimately shared more than six decades of
1616 marriage before his passing in 2015; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunter began her lengthy career as an educator
1818 at a day care center in South Dallas, and she went on to teach
1919 several grades in the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District
2020 before joining Dallas ISD in 1969; along the way, she undertook
2121 graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University and earned a
2222 master's degree in education; she retired from Dallas ISD in 1989,
2323 and over the course of her 20-year tenure with the district, she
2424 served as a history teacher at Sarah Zumwalt, L. V. Stockard and E.
2525 H. Cary Middle Schools; and
2626 WHEREAS, Deeply engaged in her community, Mrs. Hunter raised
2727 funds for a number of organizations, including March of Dimes, the
2828 American Heart Association, the YWCA, and the American Cancer
2929 Society; in addition, she was involved in a band parents group and
3030 the PTA; a woman of strong faith, she was active in the
3131 congregations she attended, serving in such roles as Sunday school
3232 teacher, Youth for Christ sponsor, and Vacation Bible School
3333 program coordinator; she also distinguished herself in her role as
3434 first lady of Olive Grove Baptist Church after Mr. Hunter became
3535 its pastor; and
3636 WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunter was the devoted mother of four
3737 daughters, Ruby, Virgie, Barbara, and Johnnie, and with the passing
3838 years, she had the privilege of seeing her family grow to include
3939 seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and
4040 WHEREAS, Although Ola Hunter is greatly missed, she has left
4141 her family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will
4242 forever treasure; now, therefore, be it
4343 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4444 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Ola Mae Hunter and
4545 extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be it
4646 further
4747 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4848 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
4949 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ola Hunter.
