5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to |

6 | 6 | | a close with the passing of Ola Mae Hunter of Dallas on April 18, |
---|
7 | 7 | | 2023, at the age of 94; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The former Ola Brown was born in Hillsboro on April |
---|
9 | 9 | | 10, 1929, to Berry and Ethel Brown, and she grew up with the |
---|
10 | 10 | | companionship of eight siblings; she moved to Dallas with her |
---|
11 | 11 | | paternal aunt at the age of 12, and after graduating from Booker T. |
---|
12 | 12 | | Washington High School in 1947, she enrolled at Bishop College, |
---|
13 | 13 | | where she earned a bachelor's degree in religion and met the love of |
---|
14 | 14 | | her life, Wardell Hunter; the couple exchanged wedding vows in |
---|
15 | 15 | | February 1950, and they ultimately shared more than six decades of |
---|
16 | 16 | | marriage before his passing in 2015; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunter began her lengthy career as an educator |
---|
18 | 18 | | at a day care center in South Dallas, and she went on to teach |
---|
19 | 19 | | several grades in the Wilmer-Hutchins Independent School District |
---|
20 | 20 | | before joining Dallas ISD in 1969; along the way, she undertook |
---|
21 | 21 | | graduate studies at Prairie View A&M University and earned a |
---|
22 | 22 | | master's degree in education; she retired from Dallas ISD in 1989, |
---|
23 | 23 | | and over the course of her 20-year tenure with the district, she |
---|
24 | 24 | | served as a history teacher at Sarah Zumwalt, L. V. Stockard and E. |
---|
25 | 25 | | H. Cary Middle Schools; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Deeply engaged in her community, Mrs. Hunter raised |
---|
27 | 27 | | funds for a number of organizations, including March of Dimes, the |
---|
28 | 28 | | American Heart Association, the YWCA, and the American Cancer |
---|
29 | 29 | | Society; in addition, she was involved in a band parents group and |
---|
30 | 30 | | the PTA; a woman of strong faith, she was active in the |
---|
31 | 31 | | congregations she attended, serving in such roles as Sunday school |
---|
32 | 32 | | teacher, Youth for Christ sponsor, and Vacation Bible School |
---|
33 | 33 | | program coordinator; she also distinguished herself in her role as |
---|
34 | 34 | | first lady of Olive Grove Baptist Church after Mr. Hunter became |
---|
35 | 35 | | its pastor; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunter was the devoted mother of four |
---|
37 | 37 | | daughters, Ruby, Virgie, Barbara, and Johnnie, and with the passing |
---|
38 | 38 | | years, she had the privilege of seeing her family grow to include |
---|
39 | 39 | | seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Although Ola Hunter is greatly missed, she has left |
---|
41 | 41 | | her family and friends with a wealth of memories that they will |
---|
42 | 42 | | forever treasure; now, therefore, be it |
---|
43 | 43 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
---|
44 | 44 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Ola Mae Hunter and |
---|
45 | 45 | | extend sincere condolences to all who mourn her passing; and, be it |
---|
46 | 46 | | further |
---|
47 | 47 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
48 | 48 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
49 | 49 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ola Hunter. |
