| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The members of Blue Star Mothers of America have |

| 6 | 6 | | long rendered exceptional service to families and U.S. military |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | personnel; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, On January 22, 1942, Army Captain George Maines ran |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | an advertisement in the Flint News-Advertiser calling for mothers |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of members of the U.S. armed forces to come together; the following |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | month, on February 1, 300 mothers held their first meeting in Flint, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Michigan, and in 1960, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc., received |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | its charter from the U.S. Congress; a nonpartisan, nonpolitical, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | and nonsectarian organization, BSMA is composed of mothers, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | stepmothers, grandmothers, foster mothers, and female legal |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | guardians whose children are serving in the military or who have |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | achieved the status of veteran; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Today, at least 10 Texas chapters across the state |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | are included in the more than 200 Blue Star Mothers of America |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | chapters that represent thousands of military families in the |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | United States; among their many contributions, BSMA members ship |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | care packages to military personnel who are deployed overseas, |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | assist veterans who are experiencing homelessness, visit |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | hospitalized veterans, provide support for wounded military |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | members, and join together to honor those who have made the ultimate |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | sacrifice in defense of our nation; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Committed to supporting our troops, our veterans, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and the families of those who so bravely serve, Blue Star Mothers of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | America fosters a community of compassion while promoting |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | patriotism and a sense of pride and appreciation for all members of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | the U.S. armed forces; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Legislature hereby commend the Texas chapters of Blue Star Mothers |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | of America for their important work and extend to all those |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | associated with the chapters sincere best wishes for the future. |
