5	5	WHEREAS, The University of North Texas polo club proved
6	6	itself the finest in the nation by winning the 2023 United States
7	7	Polo Association Division I Men's National Intercollegiate
8	8	Championship on April 15; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Despite having only competed in the sport since
10	10	2018, the Mean Green polo club quickly established itself as a
11	11	strong contender and finished as the runner-up for the national
12	12	title in April 2022; after returning to action later in the year,
13	13	UNT logged a series of impressive wins in November, capturing the
14	14	Texas College Polo Championship with a 13-10 victory over Southern
15	15	Methodist University and then bested Cornell and the University of
16	16	Virginia to clinch the prestigious William S. Field Invitational
17	17	polo tournament and the No. 1 ranking in the country; and
18	18	WHEREAS, At the conclusion of the regular season, UNT joined
19	19	the other top teams in Charlottesville, Virginia, for the 2023
20	20	National Intercollegiate Championship tournament; the Mean Green
21	21	players first squared off against Texas A&M University in the
22	22	semifinals on April 13 and defeated their interstate rivals, 20-8;
23	23	two days later, the team took to the field for the championship
24	24	match, looking to avenge the loss to the University of Virginia in
25	25	the 2022 finale; UNT built a 5-3 advantage in the first three
26	26	chukkers and added to their lead after the break; demonstrating
27	27	tremendous poise and confidence down the stretch, UNT outscored
28	28	Virginia 4-1 in the fifth chukker and then dialed up the defense the
29	29	rest of the way to seal a 14-9 victory and the university's first
30	30	polo title; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Vaughn Miller Jr. scored 17 goals in the national
32	32	tournament and was joined on the All-Star team by Andrew Scott, who
33	33	earned the Connie Upchurch Memorial Sportsmanship Award for the
34	34	second time; UNT also received important contributions in the match
35	35	from John Dencker, Vance Miller, and Niklaus Felhaber; these
36	36	determined student-athletes were ably guided by head coach Vaughn
37	37	Miller Sr.; and
38	38	WHEREAS, Winning a national championship represents
39	39	countless hours of hard work and an unwavering commitment to
40	40	excellence, and the UNT Mean Green polo players are a source of
41	41	tremendous pride to the entire university community; now,
42	42	therefore, be it
43	43	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
44	44	Legislature hereby congratulate the University of North Texas polo
45	45	club on winning the 2023 USPA Division I Men's National
46	46	Intercollegiate Championship and extend to the team's athletes,
47	47	coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued success; and,
48	48	be it further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
