5	5	WHEREAS, Dr. Mary Ellen Cavitt has been named a recipient of
6	6	a 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award by the Killeen Independent School
7	7	District Alumni Association; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Each year, the alumni association recognizes
9	9	Killeen ISD graduates who have contributed significantly to their
10	10	communities or professions and who serve as inspiring role models
11	11	for future generations; and
12	12	WHEREAS, An alumnus of Harker Heights Elementary School,
13	13	Manor Junior High, and Killeen High School, Dr. Cavitt holds
14	14	bachelor's and master's degrees in horn performance from The
15	15	Juilliard School as well as a doctorate in music education from The
16	16	University of Texas at Austin; in addition, she has completed the
17	17	Harvard University Management Development Program for higher
18	18	education leaders; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Dr. Cavitt began her career as a professional
20	20	musician and music educator, serving on the faculties of Michigan
21	21	State University, the University of Arizona, and The University of
22	22	Texas at San Antonio and as an administrator of instrumental music
23	23	at North East ISD in San Antonio; she went on to join the faculty of
24	24	Texas State University, where she currently serves as associate
25	25	vice president for academic success, dean of University College,
26	26	and professor of music education; through the years, she has also
27	27	benefited the university as director of graduate studies in music
28	28	and as associate director of the School of Music; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Dr. Cavitt has received the Texas State University
30	30	Alumni Teaching Award of Honor, Everette Swinney Faculty Senate
31	31	Teaching Award, Presidential Awards of Distinction in Service and
32	32	Teaching, and the College Achievement Award for Excellence in
33	33	Scholarly/Creative Activity; she is an active clinician and
34	34	adjudicator, and her research has been presented at regional,
35	35	national, and international conferences; moreover, she has served
36	36	as editor for the Texas Music Education Research Journal for 13
37	37	years and as chair of the Instructional Strategies Research
38	38	Interest Group for the National Association for Music Education,
39	39	and she has compiled and edited publications on music education and
40	40	music theory; and
41	41	WHEREAS, The accomplishments of noteworthy alumni are a
42	42	source of great pride to all those associated with Killeen ISD, and
43	43	Dr. Mary Cavitt is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor; now,
44	44	therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Mary Ellen Cavitt on her
47	47	receipt of a 2023 Distinguished Alumni Award from the Killeen
48	48	Independent School District Alumni Association and extend to her
49	49	sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
50	50	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
51	51	prepared for Dr. Cavitt as an expression of high regard by the Texas
52	52	House of Representatives.
