5	5	WHEREAS, Alonzo Cantu has greatly benefited the Rio Grande
6	6	Valley through his tireless endeavors as an entrepreneur and civic
7	7	leader; and
8	8	WHEREAS, The son of Mexican immigrants, Mr. Cantu worked in
9	9	the fields alongside his parents before they started a small
10	10	construction company; he went on to become the first in his family
11	11	to graduate from college, earning his bachelor's degree in finance
12	12	from the University of Houston; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Mr. Cantu subsequently followed in his father's
14	14	footsteps, embarking on a career as a builder in the late 1970s; the
15	15	president and CEO of Cantu Construction and Development, he later
16	16	branched into real estate development, title insurance, and health
17	17	care; in 1999, he and a group of nine doctors established Doctors
18	18	Hospital at Renaissance Health System, which grew into one of the
19	19	nation's largest physician-owned hospitals, and he serves the board
20	20	as finance committee chair; he is also chair of Lone Star National
21	21	Bank, a Hispanic-owned and operated financial institution;
22	22	venturing into sports, he acquired two minor-league teams, the Rio
23	23	Grande Valley FC Toros, a United Soccer League squad, and the Rio
24	24	Grande Valley Vipers, an NBA development team; and
25	25	WHEREAS, A pillar of the region's business community,
26	26	Mr. Cantu serves in numerous key leadership roles; he is a member of
27	27	the boards of the University of Houston and the Hidalgo County
28	28	Regional Mobility Authority; moreover, he works to advance the
29	29	quality of medical care as chair of the Border Health Political
30	30	Action Committee; he is a founder and chair of the Advocacy Alliance
31	31	Center of Texas, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to
32	32	encouraging participation in civic life and increasing the number
33	33	of voters; in addition, he is founder and chair of the Valley
34	34	Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS), a
35	35	nonprofit organization that has raised millions of dollars to help
36	36	deserving students in Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron Counties attend
37	37	college; he is the recipient of numerous accolades, among them the
38	38	2012 University of Houston's President's Medallion and its
39	39	Distinguished Alumni Award; and
40	40	WHEREAS, Alonzo Cantu has contributed significantly to the
41	41	prosperity of the Rio Grande Valley through his business ventures
42	42	while setting an inspiring example of philanthropy, and his
43	43	achievements have earned the respect and admiration of all who are
44	44	privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
45	45	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
46	46	Legislature hereby honor Alonzo Cantu for his accomplishments and
47	47	extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
48	48	further
49	49	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
50	50	prepared for Mr. Cantu as an expression of high regard by the Texas
51	51	House of Representatives.
