55 WHEREAS, Alonzo Cantu has greatly benefited the Rio Grande
66 Valley through his tireless endeavors as an entrepreneur and civic
77 leader; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Mexican immigrants, Mr. Cantu worked in
99 the fields alongside his parents before they started a small
1010 construction company; he went on to become the first in his family
1111 to graduate from college, earning his bachelor's degree in finance
1212 from the University of Houston; and
1313 WHEREAS, Mr. Cantu subsequently followed in his father's
1414 footsteps, embarking on a career as a builder in the late 1970s; the
1515 president and CEO of Cantu Construction and Development, he later
1616 branched into real estate development, title insurance, and health
1717 care; in 1999, he and a group of nine doctors established Doctors
1818 Hospital at Renaissance Health System, which grew into one of the
1919 nation's largest physician-owned hospitals, and he serves the board
2020 as finance committee chair; he is also chair of Lone Star National
2121 Bank, a Hispanic-owned and operated financial institution;
2222 venturing into sports, he acquired two minor-league teams, the Rio
2323 Grande Valley FC Toros, a United Soccer League squad, and the Rio
2424 Grande Valley Vipers, an NBA development team; and
2525 WHEREAS, A pillar of the region's business community,
2626 Mr. Cantu serves in numerous key leadership roles; he is a member of
2727 the boards of the University of Houston and the Hidalgo County
2828 Regional Mobility Authority; moreover, he works to advance the
2929 quality of medical care as chair of the Border Health Political
3030 Action Committee; he is a founder and chair of the Advocacy Alliance
3131 Center of Texas, a nonpartisan organization dedicated to
3232 encouraging participation in civic life and increasing the number
3333 of voters; in addition, he is founder and chair of the Valley
3434 Alliance of Mentors for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS), a
3535 nonprofit organization that has raised millions of dollars to help
3636 deserving students in Hidalgo, Starr, and Cameron Counties attend
3737 college; he is the recipient of numerous accolades, among them the
3838 2012 University of Houston's President's Medallion and its
3939 Distinguished Alumni Award; and
4040 WHEREAS, Alonzo Cantu has contributed significantly to the
4141 prosperity of the Rio Grande Valley through his business ventures
4242 while setting an inspiring example of philanthropy, and his
4343 achievements have earned the respect and admiration of all who are
4444 privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it
4545 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
4646 Legislature hereby honor Alonzo Cantu for his accomplishments and
4747 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
4848 further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for Mr. Cantu as an expression of high regard by the Texas
5151 House of Representatives.
