| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this |

| 6 | 6 | | occasion provides a fitting opportunity to promote better |

| 7 | 7 | | understanding of issues regarding mental health and to foster |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | support for individuals who are affected by mental illness; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mental illness encompasses a range of health |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | conditions that influence a person's thoughts, feelings, behavior, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | and mood; these conditions include depression, psychosis, and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | various disorders, all of which have the potential to profoundly |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | impact an individual's life and relationships; research suggests |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | that mental illness is associated with multiple causes, including |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | genetics, environmental factors, exposure to traumatic events, and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | biochemical processes; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, According to the National Alliance on Mental |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Illness, 1 in every 5 American adults and 1 in every 6 American |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | youth experience mental illness each year; although early treatment |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | can significantly improve wellness and recovery outcomes, many |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | people do not seek out the help they need due to the stigma |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | associated with mental illness, as well as an inability to |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | recognize symptoms and a lack of knowledge about health care |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | resources; depending on each patient's unique experience, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | treatment may include medication, therapy, social support, and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | educational programs; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, More work remains to be done to fight the stigma |

| 28 | 28 | | surrounding mental illness and to highlight the importance of |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | treatment, and the observance of Mental Health Awareness Month |
